How to Read English Newspaper Headlines
ইংরেজি খবরের শিরোনাম পড়ার নিয়ম
Introductionভূমিকা
A headline is not a normal English sentence, and reading it as one is why it often makes no sense. Headlines drop the small grammar words, use the present tense for events that already happened, and use 'to' for events still to come — so 'Minister opens new bridge' means he opened it, and 'DU to hold test in January' means the test has not happened yet. Learn those few conversions and the front page becomes readable.
শিরোনাম সাধারণ ইংরেজি বাক্য নয়, আর সেটাকে সাধারণ বাক্য ধরে পড়া হয় বলেই অর্থ মেলে না। শিরোনামে ছোট ব্যাকরণের শব্দগুলো বাদ যায়, ঘটে যাওয়া ঘটনার জন্য present tense বসে, আর যা এখনো হয়নি তার জন্য বসে 'to' — তাই 'Minister opens new bridge' মানে তিনি উদ্বোধন করেছেন, আর 'DU to hold test in January' মানে পরীক্ষাটা এখনো হয়নি। এই কয়েকটা রূপান্তর জানলেই প্রথম পাতা পড়া যায়।
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
Headline English is a compressed style used only in headlines: articles and forms of 'be' are usually left out, the present simple stands for a completed past event, 'to' + verb stands for the future, and a bare past participle stands for the passive.
Headline English একটি সংক্ষিপ্ত রীতি, যা কেবল শিরোনামেই ব্যবহৃত হয়: article ও be-এর রূপগুলো সাধারণত বাদ যায়, ঘটে যাওয়া ঘটনার জন্য present simple বসে, ভবিষ্যতের জন্য 'to' + verb বসে, আর passive বোঝাতে শুধু past participle বসে।
Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা
শিরোনামে জায়গা কম, তাই যতটুকু বাদ দিলেও অর্থ বোঝা যায় ততটুকু বাদ দেওয়া হয়। যেগুলো বাদ যায় সেগুলো হলো a, an, the আর be-এর রূপ (is, are, was, were) — অর্থবাহী শব্দ কখনো বাদ যায় না। তাই 'Two hurt in Mirpur bus fire' পড়ার সময় মনে মনে বসিয়ে নিন: 'Two people were hurt in a bus fire in Mirpur.' এবার tense, আর এখানেই সবচেয়ে বেশি ভুল হয়। শিরোনামে present simple মানে সাধারণত সদ্য ঘটে যাওয়া ঘটনা — 'Minister opens new bridge' মানে উদ্বোধন হয়ে গেছে, হবে না। ভবিষ্যতের জন্য বসে 'to' + verb — 'DU to hold admission test in January' মানে পরীক্ষা এখনো হয়নি। চলমান কিছু বোঝাতে বসে শুধু -ing রূপ — 'Prices rising again' মানে 'Prices are rising again.' আর শুধু past participle বসলে সেটা passive — 'Road repaired after protest' মানে রাস্তাটি মেরামত করা হয়েছে; কে করেছে বলা হয়নি। এই পার্থক্যটা ছোট কিন্তু পুরো অর্থ উল্টে দেয়: 'Man bites dog' আর 'Man bitten by dog' — প্রথমটিতে লোকটি কামড়েছে, দ্বিতীয়টিতে লোকটি কামড় খেয়েছে।
Examplesউদাহরণ
- 'Two hurt in Mirpur bus fire' = Two people were hurt in a bus fire in Mirpur.'were' আর 'a' বাদ গেছে — মনে মনে বসিয়ে নিলেই বাক্যটা দাঁড়ায়।
- 'Minister opens new bridge' = The minister opened the new bridge (it has happened).শিরোনামের present simple মানে সদ্য ঘটে যাওয়া ঘটনা, ভবিষ্যৎ নয়।
- 'DU to hold admission test in January' = the test will be held; it has not happened yet.'to' + verb মানে সামনে ঘটবে — এটাই শিরোনামের ভবিষ্যৎ কাল।
- 'Prices rising again in kitchen markets' = Prices are rising again.শুধু -ing রূপ মানে চলমান — 'are' বাদ গেছে।
- 'Road repaired after week-long protest' = The road has been repaired (passive).শুধু past participle মানে passive — কাজটি করা হয়েছে, কে করেছে বলা হয়নি।
- 'Rain likely till Friday: Met office' — the colon means the Met office said it.কোলন মানে 'অমুক বলেছেন' — সূত্রটি কোলনের পরে।
- 'School tuition fee hike protest' — read right to left: a protest about a hike in school tuition fees.পরপর noun থাকলে ডান থেকে বাঁয়ে পড়ুন — প্রতিবাদ, কীসের? ফি বৃদ্ধির।
- 'Traders in row over new market rent' — 'row' here means a dispute, not a line.এখানে row মানে বিরোধ, সারি নয় — শিরোনামের শব্দের অর্থ আলাদা হয়।
Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
Reading 'Minister opens new bridge' as news about something that will happen.
Reading it as something that has just happened.
Bangla headlines normally use a past form for a past event, so the English habit of putting a finished event in the present simple has no counterpart and reads as future or ongoing.
Reading 'Man bitten by dog' and 'Man bites dog' as the same news.
Treating a bare past participle as passive and a present-simple verb as active.
The dropped 'was' is the only thing marking the passive, so the whole meaning turns on a word that is not printed.
Looking up 'row', 'bid' or 'toll' and taking the first dictionary meaning.
Learning the headline sense: row = dispute, bid = attempt, toll = number of casualties.
Newspapers choose these words because they are short, not because they are common — and their headline sense is often not the sense a word list teaches.
Reading 'school tuition fee hike protest' from left to right as one chain.
Reading the last noun first and asking 'of what?' back to the beginning.
Bangla marks these links with 'র/এর'; English headlines delete the links entirely, so the relationship has to be rebuilt by the reader.
Treating a headline with words in quotation marks as an established fact.
Reading the quotation marks as 'somebody claims this'.
Quotation marks in a headline signal an allegation the paper is reporting rather than confirming.
Tipsটিপস
- Rebuild the missing words out loud: put back a, an, the and the right form of be. — বাদ পড়া শব্দগুলো মুখে বসিয়ে নিন — a, an, the আর be-এর ঠিক রূপটি।
- If a headline defeats you, read the first sentence of the story — it says the same thing in full grammar. — শিরোনামে আটকে গেলে খবরের প্রথম বাক্যটি পড়ুন — সেখানে একই কথা পূর্ণ ব্যাকরণে লেখা থাকে।
- Learn ten headline words — bid, row, hike, probe, toll, slam, mull, nab, quiz, hold — and the front page opens up. — দশটি শিরোনাম-শব্দ শিখে নিন — bid, row, hike, probe, toll, slam, mull, nab, quiz, hold — প্রথম পাতা অনেকটাই খুলে যাবে।
- Read the headlines of one page every day and rewrite three of them as full sentences. — প্রতিদিন এক পাতার শিরোনামগুলো পড়ুন আর তিনটিকে পূর্ণ বাক্যে লিখে ফেলুন।
- Watch for 'to' — it is the quickest way to tell tomorrow's news from today's. — 'to' চোখে পড়লেই বুঝবেন ঘটনা এখনো ঘটেনি — আজকের আর আগামীকালের খবর আলাদা করার সবচেয়ে সহজ চিহ্ন।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা
Why do English newspaper headlines look grammatically wrong?
They are written in a compressed style that saves space: articles and forms of 'be' are dropped, tenses are shortened, and links between nouns are deleted. The grammar is consistent, just abbreviated — and the opening sentence of the story normally restores it.
Why does a headline use the present tense for something that already happened?
It is a convention of headline writing that makes news feel immediate. 'Minister opens bridge' reports a completed event; if the event were still to come, the headline would use 'to' — 'Minister to open bridge'.
How do I know if a headline is about the past or the future?
Look for 'to' before the verb: 'to hold', 'to begin', 'to visit' all mean it has not happened yet. A plain present-tense verb means it has happened, and a bare past participle means it was done to somebody or something.
Which headline words should I learn first?
The short ones papers reuse constantly — bid (attempt), row (dispute), hike (increase), probe (investigation), toll (number of casualties), slam (criticise sharply), mull (consider), nab (arrest), quiz (question) and hold (arrange, or detain). Their headline sense is often not the everyday one.
