How to Understand English News
Introduction
News is the one kind of English listening where you can cheat, legally and completely. Every story in an English bulletin has already been reported in Bangla — you can watch the Bangla news at eight, learn who did what to whom, and then hear the English version knowing the whole story in advance. Your ear is then free to do the only job that matters, which is matching sounds to words it already expects. No other listening material gives you that.
Definition
A news bulletin is the most predictable spoken English there is. Every story runs headline first, then who and where, then details, then reaction, then what happens next — and it is written to be read aloud, so the sentences are short and the grammar is plain. The difficulty is only in the register: a small, fixed set of words and structures that news uses and daily speech does not.
Bangla Explanation
সূত্র বোঝাতে: according to, officials say, sources said, reports suggest, is said to have। ঘটনার ধরন বোঝাতে: casualties, evacuated, launched, urged, condemned, imposed, resigned, unveiled। সময় বোঝাতে: earlier today, in the wake of, following, amid। আর গঠন — সংবাদে passive voice ও reported speech খুব বেশি ব্যবহৃত হয়: 'Five people are said to have been injured'।

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is English news so hard to understand?
News is spoken quickly, uses formal words and packs a lot of information into each sentence. But it follows a fixed headline-first structure, which makes it more predictable than it sounds.
Which English news should a Bangladeshi learner start with?
Start with slow bulletins made for learners, with subtitles or transcripts. Once you follow those, move up to natural-speed channels like BBC and switch the subtitles off.
Does reading the news in Bangla first really help?
Yes. When you already know the story, your ear can focus on the English words and structure instead of trying to work out the facts at the same time.
