Introductionভূমিকা

The ending -tion is said 'shun' (nation, education) — except after s, where -stion becomes 'chun' (question, suggestion). The ending -sion is 'zhun' after a vowel (vision, decision) and 'shun' after a consonant or a double s (tension, mission). In almost all of these words the stress falls on the syllable just before the ending.

-tion, -sion and -ssion are noun endings. They are never stressed themselves, and their vowel is a weak schwa. -tion = /ʃən/, -stion = /stʃən/, vowel + sion = /ʒən/, consonant or ss + ion = /ʃən/.

এই প্রত্যয়গুলো ইংরেজিতে এত বেশি আসে যে একবার ঠিক করে নিলে শত শত শব্দের উচ্চারণ একসাথে ঠিক হয়ে যায়। চারটি অবস্থা আলাদা করে দেখুন। এক, সাধারণ -tion উচ্চারিত হয় 'শন': nation, station, action, education, information। অক্ষর ধরে 'টি-অন' পড়া যাবে না। দুই, s-এর পরে -tion বসলে সেটি 'চন' হয়ে যায়: question = 'কোয়েসচন', suggestion = 'সাজেসচন', digestion = 'ডাইজেসচন'। এই শর্তটাই সবচেয়ে বেশি ভুল হয়, কারণ বানানে t দেখা যায় বলে অনেকে 'কোয়েস-টি-অন' বলে ফেলেন — তিন তালের একটা শব্দ, যেটা ইংরেজিতে আসলে দুই তালের। তিন, -sion-এর আগে যদি স্বরবর্ণ থাকে, তবে উচ্চারণ 'ঝন': vision, decision, television, occasion, confusion, division। এই /ʒ/ ধ্বনিটা বাংলায় নেই, তাই আলাদা করে বানাতে হয় — 'sh' বলুন, ধরে রাখুন, তারপর গলার কাঁপুনি চালু করে দিন; sh-এর কণ্ঠস্বরসহ রূপটাই /ʒ/। ইংরেজিতে এই ধ্বনি measure, pleasure, treasure শব্দেও আছে। চার, -sion-এর আগে ব্যঞ্জনবর্ণ (n, l) থাকলে বা বানানে দুটো s থাকলে উচ্চারণ আবার 'শন': tension, mansion, expulsion, mission, discussion, permission। শেষে জোরের কথা, যেটি আলাদা করে মনে রাখা দরকার: এই প্রত্যয়গুলোতে কখনো জোর পড়ে না। প্রায় সব শব্দেই জোর পড়ে ঠিক তার আগের syllable-এ — eduCAtion, informAtion, deCIsion, disCUSsion। একটা চেনা ব্যতিক্রম মাথায় রাখুন: television-এ জোর পড়ে একদম প্রথম syllable-এ — TEL-e-vi-sion। আর প্রত্যয়ের স্বরটি দুর্বল schwa, তাই 'শোন' নয়, হালকা করে 'শন'।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

  • "kwes-ti-on" for question

    question = KWES-chun, two syllables

    The letters t and i get read as separate sounds, but -stion is pronounced /stʃən/. Reading the spelling adds a beat that English does not have.

  • "di-si-shon" for decision

    decision = di-SI-zhun

    A vowel before -sion gives /ʒ/, a sound Bangla does not have, so it is replaced by the nearest familiar one, /ʃ/.

  • stressing the ending: informaTION, educaTION

    inforMAtion, eduCAtion

    These endings are never stressed themselves. In almost every word of this type the stress sits on the syllable immediately before them — television, stressed on TEL, is the exception you meet most often.

  • pronouncing 'mission' and 'vision' with the same middle sound

    mission = MISH-un, vision = VIZH-un

    Double s keeps /ʃ/; a single s after a vowel becomes /ʒ/. The spelling does tell you here, if you look at the letter before the ending.

Why is 'question' not pronounced like 'nation'?

Because of the s in front of it. When -tion follows an s the whole ending shifts to /stʃən/, so question, suggestion, digestion and congestion all have a ch sound where nation and station have sh.

Does Bangla have the /ʒ/ sound in 'vision'?

No. Bangla has শ and জ, but not the voiced sh that English uses in vision, decision, measure and pleasure. The easiest way to build it is to hold a long sh and then add voice without moving the tongue.

Are there exceptions to the -tion rule?

Very few, and one worth knowing is 'equation', which most speakers say with /ʒ/ rather than /ʃ/. The stress rule is nearly as steady — the syllable before the ending carries the stress in almost every word of this type — but television is stressed on its first syllable, TEL-e-vi-sion.
