Now say স্কুল, স্টেশন, স্টপ. Every one of those has a clean, thin /s/ in it — the exact sound you were told Bangla speakers cannot make. You have it already. Bangla just keeps it locked in one place: স is pronounced /s/ only when another consonant follows it, and everywhere else শ, ষ and স all come out as 'sh'. That is why 'school' is easy and 'see' turns into 'she'. The work is not learning a new sound; it is taking a sound out of the cage.

Both are hisses, and the only difference is where the narrow gap sits. For /s/ the tongue tip points at the ridge right behind the top teeth, the gap is small, the lips stay flat, and the sound is thin and high. For /ʃ/ the tongue slides back about a centimetre, the gap is wider, the lips push forward and round, and the sound drops lower and fuller.

শেখার সবচেয়ে দ্রুত পথ হলো নিজের ভাষা থেকেই ধ্বনিটা ধার করা। 'স্কুল' বলুন, কিন্তু 'ক'-এ পৌঁছানোর আগেই থেমে যান — মুখে যা পড়ে থাকল, ওটাই ইংরেজি /s/। এবার ওই ধ্বনিটা ধরে রেখে পেছনে 'ক' বসানোর বদলে একটা স্বর বসান: s———ee, s———un, s———it। প্রথম কয়েকবার হাস্যকর লম্বা শোনাবে, তাতে অসুবিধা নেই; উদ্দেশ্য হলো মুখকে বোঝানো যে এই ধ্বনিটা স্বরের আগেও বসতে পারে। এখন ঠোঁটের দিকে তাকান, কারণ কান দিয়ে ধরার চেয়ে চোখ দিয়ে ধরা সহজ। /ʃ/ বলার সময় ঠোঁট সামনে এগিয়ে গোল হয় — আয়নায় স্পষ্ট দেখা যায়। /s/ বলার সময় ঠোঁট একদম সমান, বরং সামান্য চওড়া। তাই অনুশীলনের সময় আঙুল দিয়ে ঠোঁটের দুই কোণ হালকা করে পাশে টেনে রাখুন; ঠোঁট গোল হতে না পারলে 'শ' বেরোনোরও উপায় থাকে না। এক-দুই দিন এভাবে করলে জিভ নিজেই জায়গাটা মনে রাখে। কোথায় এই ভুলটা সত্যিই দামি? প্রথমত, শব্দজোড়ায় অর্থ পাল্টে যায়: sea/she, sip/ship, save/shave, sort/short, sock/shock, self/shelf, sell/shell, sign/shine, seat/sheet, suit/shoot। দ্বিতীয়ত, নিজের নামে ও পরিচয়ে — Sabbir, Sumaiya, Salma, Sylhet, Savar — যেখানে ইংরেজিতে কথা বলার সময় নামটা 'শ' দিয়ে শুরু হলে বানান করতে গিয়ে ঝামেলা বাধে। তৃতীয়ত, ইংরেজির প্রতিটি বহুবচন ও present simple-এর তৃতীয় পুরুষে: books, cats, wants, sits, students, results। এই -s গুলো ভুল হলে একটা শব্দ নয়, প্রতি তিন-চার শব্দে একবার করে ধরা পড়ে। একটা বাড়তি সতর্কতা: /s/ শিখে ফেলার পর অনেকে উল্টো দিকে ঝুঁকে পড়ে আর 'sh'-কেও 's' বানিয়ে ফেলে — she হয় 'see', shop হয় 'sop', English হয় 'Englis'। মনে রাখার নিয়মটা বানানেই আছে, অনুমানের দরকার নেই: বানানে sh, ti (nation), ci (special), ssi (mission) থাকলে মোটা 'sh'; একা s থাকলে সরু /s/। আর প্রতিদিনের অভ্যাস হিসেবে একটাই বাক্য জোরে পড়ুন — 'She sells seashells by the seashore' — এতে দুটো ধ্বনি পাশাপাশি বসে, তাই জিভ কোথায় পিছলে যাচ্ছে সেটা সঙ্গে সঙ্গেই ধরা পড়ে।

Why do Bengali speakers say 'sh' instead of 's'?
