'Bad' uses a wide, open /æ/ — the vowel in Bangla ব্যাগ — while 'bed' uses a smaller /e/, the vowel in এক. Bangla has both sounds, so this is not a sound you must learn to make: it is a matter of knowing which English word takes which, because the spelling often lies.

/æ/ (bad, man, cat) is made with the jaw open and the tongue low and forward — a wide, slightly long vowel. /e/ (bed, men, tell) is made with the jaw only half open and the tongue a step higher — a shorter, tighter vowel.

প্রথমে দুটো ধ্বনি হাতে নিন। /æ/ হলো 'ব্যাগ', 'ব্যাংক', 'ক্যাম্পাস'-এর স্বর — চোয়াল বেশ খোলা, মুখ চওড়া। /e/ হলো 'এক', 'দেশ'-এর স্বর — চোয়াল কম খোলা। আয়নার সামনে পরপর বলুন: bad — bed। প্রথমটায় মুখ বেশি খুলবে, দ্বিতীয়টায় কম। এইটুকুই শারীরিক পার্থক্য। আসল কষ্ট তাই উচ্চারণে নয়, বাছাইয়ে — কোন শব্দে কোন স্বর, বানান দেখে সবসময় বোঝা যায় না। কাজে লাগে এমন একটা সূত্র আছে, তবে শর্তসহ: বদ্ধ syllable-এ একা a সাধারণত /æ/ (cat, bag, man, hand, sad), আর বদ্ধ syllable-এ একা e সাধারণত /e/ (bed, men, tell, send)। এখন ব্যতিক্রমগুলো, যেগুলো আসলে প্রতিদিন ব্যবহার হয়: said উচ্চারণ 'sed' — bed-এর সাথে মিল, 'সেইড' নয়; says উচ্চারণ 'sez'; any আর many-তে a থাকলেও স্বর /e/; friend-এ ie থাকলেও /e/; আর head, bread, dead, ready-তে ea-এর উচ্চারণ /e/, /iː/ নয়। এই কয়েকটা শব্দ আলাদা করে মুখস্থ করে নিলে বাকিটা নিয়মেই চলে। পার্থক্যটা কেন দরকার, বাক্যেই পরিষ্কার: 'ten pens' আর 'ten pans' দুটোই সম্ভব বাক্য — একটা মানে দশটা কলম, আরেকটা দশটা কড়াই; শ্রোতা কেবল স্বরটা শুনেই বোঝে আপনি কোনটা বলছেন।

"sayd" for said
said is pronounced 'sed' and rhymes with bed
The spelling ai normally suggests /eɪ/, but said and says are irregular — they take the short /e/.
"mani" with the vowel of bag for many
many and any use /e/ — 'meni', 'eni'
These two very common words break the usual a-in-a-closed-syllable pattern, so the rule alone gives the wrong answer.
"heed" or "hade" for head
head rhymes with bed
ea is usually /iː/ (meat, read), but in head, bread, dead and ready it is the short /e/.
using the same vowel for 'man' and 'men'
man = wide open jaw /æ/; men = half-open jaw /e/
Both vowels exist in Bangla, but in fast speech one habit takes over both words, and the singular and plural stop being distinguishable.

Does Bangla have the /æ/ sound?
Yes — it is the vowel in ব্যাগ, ব্যাংক and ক্যামেরা. That is why this pair is easier than v and w: you can already make both sounds, and the work is deciding which English word takes which.
Why is 'said' not pronounced like 'paid'?
said and says are irregular. Both come from the verb say but shortened in speech long ago, so said is /sed/ and says is /sez/, while the base word say keeps /eɪ/.
Is there a rule for choosing between the two vowels?
