English Vowel Sounds
English Vowel Sounds (ইংরেজি স্বরধ্বনি)
Introductionভূমিকা
Here is a fact about your own language that explains most of your vowel trouble. Bangla writes হ্রস্ব ই and দীর্ঘ ঈ, হ্রস্ব উ and দীর্ঘ ঊ — a short one and a long one — and in modern speech they sound exactly the same. We learn in school which spelling a word takes, never how to hear the difference, because there is no difference to hear. English asks you to hear it: ship and sheep, full and fool, pull and pool are different words. Your ear has simply never been given the job.
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
A vowel is the sound your voice makes when air flows out with nothing blocking it — only the position of the tongue and the shape of the lips decide which vowel comes out. English uses about twenty of them, sorted into short vowels (ship, cat, put), long vowels (sheep, car, food), diphthongs where one vowel glides into another (boat, price, house), and the schwa /ə/, the weak vowel that fills the unstressed syllables of almost every long word.
Bangla Explanation
একই কথা full/fool, pull/pool এবং live/leave-এর ক্ষেত্রে। একই ব্যাপার banana, about, teacher, problem, Bangladesh-এ। শব্দের একটি syllable মোটা করে বাকিগুলো ইচ্ছে করে দুর্বল করে ফেলুন — এই একটা অভ্যাসই আপনার ইংরেজিকে সবচেয়ে দ্রুত স্বাভাবিক শোনায়। শেষে বানানের ফাঁদ। বাংলা লিপি প্রায় ধ্বনিভিত্তিক — যা লেখা, তা-ই পড়া। ইংরেজি নয়। একই অক্ষর 'a' পাঁচ রকম শোনায় (cat, car, cake, call, about), আর একই ধ্বনি /iː/ ছয় রকম বানানে লেখা হয় (see, sea, key, machine, field, people)। তাই ইংরেজি শব্দ শেখার সময় বানান আর উচ্চারণ দুটো আলাদা তথ্য হিসেবে শিখুন। নতুন শব্দ পেলে অভিধানে উচ্চারণটা একবার শুনে নিন এবং নিজের নোটে লিখে রাখুন কোন vowel-টা বসেছে; বানান দেখে অনুমান করতে গেলে দশবারের ছয়বারই ভুল হবে।
Examplesউদাহরণ
- sheep — sounds like "SHEEP" with a long eeভেড়া; /iː/ লম্বা ঈ-এর মতো টানটান।
- ship — sounds like "SHIP" with a short iজাহাজ; /ɪ/ ছোট ও শিথিল ই।
- cat — sounds like "KAT" (mouth wide, a between 'a' and 'e')বিড়াল; /æ/ বাংলায় নেই — মুখ চওড়া করে অ্যা-এর মতো।
- cut — sounds like "KAHT" with a short uhকাটা; /ʌ/ ছোট 'আ'-এর মতো, ঠোঁট শিথিল।
- bird — sounds like "BURD" with a long urপাখি; /ɜː/ ঠোঁট মাঝামাঝি, জিভ কেন্দ্রে।
- about — the first a sounds like a weak "uh" (schwa)সম্পর্কে; শুরুর 'a' দুর্বল schwa /ə/।
- boat — sounds like "BOHT", the o glides (diphthong)নৌকা; /əʊ/ দুটি ধ্বনি মিশে যায়।
- full — sounds like "FUL" with a short ooপূর্ণ; /ʊ/ ছোট উ, ঠোঁট অল্প গোল।
Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
ship and sheep said the same way
ship (short /ɪ/) vs sheep (long /iː/)
Bangla has one 'i', so learners merge them. Hold the vowel longer and smile more for sheep.
full and fool said the same way
full (short /ʊ/) vs fool (long /uː/)
The length changes the word (full = পূর্ণ, fool = বোকা). Keep full short and relaxed.
cat pronounced "cot" or "ket"
cat with the wide /æ/ vowel
/æ/ does not exist in Bangla. Open the mouth wide, tongue low and forward.
teacher said as "tee-char" with a strong last vowel
teacher = "TEE-chuh" with a weak schwa
Unstressed vowels in English become a weak schwa /ə/, not a full vowel.
Tipsটিপস
- For long vowels (sheep, car), physically hold the sound a beat longer than feels natural. — Long vowel-এ (sheep, car) ধ্বনিটি স্বাভাবিকের চেয়ে একটু বেশি সময় ধরে রাখুন।
- Practise minimal pairs — ship/sheep, full/fool, bad/bed — out loud until you hear the difference. — minimal pair — ship/sheep, full/fool, bad/bed — জোরে বলে পার্থক্য শুনুন।
- Say the schwa softly and quickly; never give an unstressed vowel a strong Bangla sound. — schwa নরম ও দ্রুত বলুন; unstressed vowel-কে কখনো জোরালো বাংলা ধ্বনি দেবেন না।
- Watch your mouth in a mirror — for /æ/ (cat) the mouth should open clearly wide. — আয়নায় মুখ দেখুন — /æ/ (cat)-এ মুখ স্পষ্ট চওড়া হওয়া উচিত।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা
How many vowel sounds does English have?
Around twenty — roughly twelve single vowels plus eight diphthongs — even though there are only five vowel letters. That is why the same letter can sound different in different words.
What is the schwa and why does it matter?
The schwa /ə/ is a weak 'uh' used in unstressed syllables (about, teacher, doctor). It is the most common vowel in English, so using it makes your speech sound natural.
Why do 'ship' and 'sheep' sound the same to me?
Bangla has a single 'i' sound, so both feel identical. In English they differ in length and tongue tension: ship is short /ɪ/, sheep is long /iː/. Practise them as a pair.
