English Consonant Sounds
English Consonant Sounds (ইংরেজি ব্যঞ্জনধ্বনি)
Introductionভূমিকা
English has about twenty-four consonant sounds. Most match a Bangla sound closely, but a handful — v, w, f, z and the two 'th' sounds — trip up almost every Bangla speaker. Fix those few and your English instantly sounds clearer.
ইংরেজিতে প্রায় চব্বিশটি consonant ধ্বনি আছে। বেশিরভাগই বাংলার কাছাকাছি, কিন্তু কয়েকটি — v, w, f, z আর দুটি 'th' — প্রায় সব বাংলাভাষীর জন্য কঠিন। এগুলো ঠিক করলেই উচ্চারণ পরিষ্কার শোনায়।
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
A consonant sound is made by blocking or narrowing the airflow with the lips, teeth or tongue. Many come in voiced/voiceless pairs — /p/ and /b/, /f/ and /v/, /s/ and /z/ — where only the voice (throat vibration) changes.
Consonant ধ্বনি তৈরি হয় ঠোঁট, দাঁত বা জিভ দিয়ে বাতাস আটকে বা সরু করে। অনেকগুলো voiced/voiceless জোড়ায় আসে — /p/-/b/, /f/-/v/, /s/-/z/ — যেখানে শুধু কণ্ঠস্বরের কম্পন বদলায়।
Bangla Explanation
Examplesউদাহরণ
- van — top teeth touch bottom lip, then buzz /v/গাড়ি; উপরের দাঁত নিচের ঠোঁটে, গলায় কম্পন।
- wet — round the lips, no teeth, /w/ভেজা; ঠোঁট গোল, দাঁত লাগে না।
- fan — teeth on lip but no voice /f/পাখা; দাঁত-ঠোঁট, গলায় কম্পন নেই।
- pan — both lips, a puff of air /p/পাত্র; দুই ঠোঁট, বাতাসের ধাক্কা।
- zip — a buzzing /z/ (voiced s)চেন; গুনগুন করা /z/, গলায় কম্পন।
- sip — a hissing /s/ (no voice)চুমুক; হিস হিস /s/, কম্পন নেই।
- dogs — the final s sounds like /z/কুকুরগুলো; শেষের 's' আসলে /z/।
- thin — tongue between the teeth /θ/পাতলা; জিভ দাঁতের মাঝে।
Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
van pronounced like "wan"
van with top teeth on the bottom lip
/v/ needs teeth-to-lip contact; /w/ uses rounded lips with no teeth. They are different sounds.
fan pronounced like "pan"
fan with teeth touching the lip /f/
/f/ is made with teeth on lip; /p/ closes both lips. Mixing them changes the word.
is and zoo said with a plain /s/
is /ɪz/ and zoo /zuː/ with a buzzing /z/
The /z/ sound (voiced) is common at word endings in English; a plain /s/ sounds unnatural.
school pronounced "ishkul" with an extra vowel
school with a clean /sk/ cluster
Bangla speakers add a vowel before /s/+consonant clusters. Start the /s/ directly, no 'i' before it.
Tipsটিপস
- Put a hand on your throat: if it vibrates the sound is voiced (v, z, b), if not it is voiceless (f, s, p). — গলায় হাত রাখুন: কম্পন হলে voiced (v, z, b), না হলে voiceless (f, s, p)।
- For /v/ and /f/, look in a mirror and check your top teeth actually touch your bottom lip. — /v/ ও /f/-এ আয়নায় দেখুন উপরের দাঁত সত্যিই নিচের ঠোঁটে লাগছে কি না।
- For /w/, start by rounding your lips as if to say 'oo', then open — no teeth involved. — /w/-এ প্রথমে 'উ'-এর মতো ঠোঁট গোল করে খুলুন — দাঁত লাগবে না।
- For /s/+consonant words (school, sky, spoon), never add an 'i' before the s. — /s/+consonant শব্দে (school, sky, spoon) 's'-এর আগে 'i' যোগ করবেন না।

What is the difference between /v/ and /w/?
For /v/ your top teeth touch your bottom lip and buzz (van). For /w/ you round your lips like 'oo' and there are no teeth (wet). Bangla often merges them, so practise as a pair.
What are voiced and voiceless consonants?
Voiced consonants vibrate the throat (v, z, b, d, g); voiceless ones do not (f, s, p, t, k). Many come in pairs where only the voicing changes, like /f/ vs /v/.
Why do I add an 'i' before words like 'school'?
Bangla does not usually start words with /s/+consonant clusters, so learners insert a vowel. Practise starting the /s/ directly, gliding straight into the next consonant.
