Bengali and English use different sets of sounds, so a few English sounds simply do not exist in Bangla. Because of this, most Bengali speakers repeat the same handful of pronunciation mistakes — v/w, p/f, s/sh, z/j and th. The good news: each one is a small mouth movement you can learn in minutes.

A pronunciation mistake happens when we replace an English sound we do not have with the nearest Bangla sound — for example saying 'w' for 'v', or 'sh' for 's'. Fixing it means learning where to put your lips, teeth and tongue.
উচ্চারণ ভুল তখন হয় যখন আমরা বাংলায় নেই এমন কোনো ইংরেজি ধ্বনির বদলে সবচেয়ে কাছের বাংলা ধ্বনি বসাই — যেমন 'v'-এর জায়গায় 'w', বা 's'-এর জায়গায় 'sh'। ঠিক করার উপায় হলো ঠোঁট, দাঁত ও জিভ কোথায় রাখতে হবে তা শেখা।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
"wan" for van
"van" (top teeth on lower lip)
Bangla has no /v/, so speakers use /w/. For 'v' the top teeth must gently touch the lower lip.
"pan" for fan
"fan" (teeth on lip, air flowing)
Bangla ফ is close to 'ph/f', but many speakers harden it to a full 'p'. Keep air flowing over the lip for 'f'.
"shun" for sun
"sun" (thin hiss)
Bangla স is often pronounced like 'sh', so English 's' slips into 'sh'. Keep the tongue forward for a sharp 's'.
"joo" for zoo
"zoo" (buzzing z)
Bangla has no /z/, so 'z' becomes 'j'. 'z' is a soft buzzing sound with the tongue near the teeth ridge.

- Practise minimal pairs out loud: van/wan, fan/pan, sun/shun, zoo/joo. Hearing the contrast trains your mouth fastest. — জোড়া শব্দ জোরে অনুশীলন করুন: van/wan, fan/pan, sun/shun, zoo/joo। পার্থক্য শুনলেই মুখ দ্রুত শেখে।
- Use a mirror. For v and f you should see your teeth on your lip; for w your lips are round and your teeth are hidden. — আয়না ব্যবহার করুন। v ও f-এ দাঁত ঠোঁটে দেখা যাবে; w-এ ঠোঁট গোল আর দাঁত লুকানো থাকবে।
- Hold your hand in front of your mouth. For f and s you feel a steady stream of air; for p you feel one sharp puff. — মুখের সামনে হাত রাখুন। f ও s-এ টানা হাওয়া টের পাবেন; p-এ একটি ঝটকা টের পাবেন।
- Fix one sound per week. Trying to correct everything at once usually fixes nothing. — সপ্তাহে একটি ধ্বনি ঠিক করুন। একসাথে সব ঠিক করতে গেলে সাধারণত কিছুই হয় না।

Why do Bengali speakers make these pronunciation mistakes?
Because sounds like /v/, /z/ and 'th' do not exist in Bangla, and /s/ often sounds like 'sh'. The mouth naturally reaches for the closest Bangla sound, so English words get replaced sound-for-sound.
Can I really lose my accent?
You do not need to lose your accent — clear, confident English is the goal, not a foreign accent. Fixing a few key sounds (v/w, p/f, s/sh, z/j, th) makes you far easier to understand.
Which mistake should I fix first?
