Long before a teacher explains /v/, Bangla has already taught you the wrong answer. Every English v arrives in our writing as ভ — ভিডিও, ভ্যান, ভোট, ভিসা — and ভ is not a v at all. It is a b with a breath behind it, made by two lips slapping together, with the teeth nowhere near the lip. So the word you have said a thousand times is training the exact muscle you now have to stop using.

/v/ is a fricative: the top teeth rest on the inside of the lower lip, the air keeps flowing through that narrow gap, and the throat vibrates — you can hold it for five seconds. /w/ is a glide: the lips round into a small circle, the teeth touch nothing, and the mouth immediately slides off into the next vowel — you cannot hold it at all.
/v/ একটি fricative: উপরের দাঁত নিচের ঠোঁটের ভেতরের দিকে ঠেকে থাকে, ওই সরু ফাঁক দিয়ে হাওয়া বেরোতেই থাকে, আর গলা কাঁপে — পাঁচ সেকেন্ড ধরে রাখা যায়। /w/ একটি glide: ঠোঁট গোল হয়ে ছোট বৃত্ত বানায়, দাঁত কোথাও ঠেকে না, আর মুখ সঙ্গে সঙ্গেই পরের স্বরে পিছলে যায় — ধরে রাখা যায় না।

দুটো ধ্বনির জন্য দুটো আলাদা যন্ত্র। /v/ দাঁতের যন্ত্র, /w/ ঠোঁটের যন্ত্র। /v/ ধরার পরীক্ষা: উপরের দাঁত নিচের ঠোঁটে ঠেকিয়ে গলা কাঁপিয়ে টানুন — ভভভভ নয়, vvvvv, পাঁচ সেকেন্ড। ধরে রাখতে পারলে ঠিক হয়েছে; দুই ঠোঁট লেগে গিয়ে ধ্বনিটা ভেঙে গেলে ওটা 'ভ' হয়ে গেছে। /w/ ধরার পরীক্ষা উল্টো: 'উ' বলে সেখান থেকে দ্রুত পরের স্বরে যান — we = উ+ঈ, want = উ+অন্ট, water = উ+অটার। এখানে ধরে রাখার কিছু নেই, পুরো ধ্বনিটাই নড়াচড়া। এবার সেই বিপদটার কথা, যেটা শেখার পরেই শুরু হয়: overcorrection। ক্লাসে /v/ শেখানোর পর দুই সপ্তাহ ধরে শিক্ষার্থীরা সব w-কে v বানিয়ে ফেলে — water হয় 'vater', window হয় 'vindow', we হয় 've'। এটা আগের ভুলের চেয়ে বেশি কানে লাগে, কারণ w দিয়ে শুরু হওয়া শব্দগুলোই ইংরেজিতে সবচেয়ে বেশি ব্যবহৃত: we, will, would, what, when, where, why, with, want, work, well। নিয়মটা বানানেই লেখা আছে — যে শব্দে ইংরেজি বানানে w আছে সেখানে দাঁত নিষিদ্ধ, আর যেখানে v আছে সেখানে দাঁত বাধ্যতামূলক। কোনো ব্যতিক্রম নেই, তাই আন্দাজ করার দরকারও নেই। কোথায় ধরা পড়ে? ইন্টারভিউতে 'We have five years of experience' — একই বাক্যে দুটোই। ফোনে নিজের ইমেইল বা নাম বানান করার সময় 'double-u'। আর IELTS Speaking-এ pronunciation band-এ, যেখানে পরীক্ষক আলাদা করে ধ্বনি ধরেন না, কিন্তু vine/wine, vest/west, veil/wail, verse/worse একরকম শোনালে বোধগম্যতার নম্বর নামে। দিনে এক মিনিট আয়নার সামনে এই জোড়াগুলো বলুন এবং চোখ রাখুন ছবির দিকে: /v/-তে উপরের দাঁত দেখা যাবে, /w/-তে ঠোঁট গোল হয়ে দাঁত ঢেকে দেবে। কান নয়, চোখ দিয়েই এই দুটো আলাদা করা সবচেয়ে সহজ।

Why do Bengali speakers mix up v and w?
Bangla does not have a true /v/ or /w/. The nearest Bangla letters (ভ and ও/উ) are not the same, so speakers often use one blended sound for both English letters, making words like 'vine' and 'wine' sound identical.
Is 'v' the same as the Bangla ভ (bh)?
