Introductionভূমিকা

The words we get wrong in Bangladesh are rarely the rare ones. They are the words we use every day — police, hotel, machine, certificate, career, university — and we get them wrong for a particular reason: each one entered Bangla first, took a Bangla shape with even beats and full vowels, and then walked back into our English wearing that shape. পুলিশ is a perfectly good Bangla word. It is not the English one.

Definitionসংজ্ঞা

A commonly mispronounced word is one where the spoken form and the written form have drifted apart. Three drifts cover almost all of them: letters that stopped being said (island, receipt), syllables that collapsed (chocolate, comfortable), and a strong beat that moved somewhere the spelling does not show (poLICE, deVELopment).

Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা

প্রথম দল — ঋণশব্দের ফাঁদ, আর এটাই বাংলাদেশে সবচেয়ে বড় দল। বাংলায় ঢোকার সময় শব্দগুলো সমান ধাক্কা পেয়েছে, ইংরেজিতে সেগুলোর একটা ভাগ মোটা আর বাকিটা প্রায় নেই। police → pəLEES ('পুলিশ' নয়)। hotel → hoTEL। machine → məSHEEN। certificate → sərTIFikət (শেষে 'কেট' নয়, প্রায় 'কিট')। development → dəVELəpmənt। university → yooniVERsity। engineer → enjiNEER। examination → egzamiNAYshən। Wednesday = WENZ-day (দুই beat)। island = EYE-lənd। receipt = ri-SEET। business = BIZ-nis (দুই beat, তিন নয়)। comfortable = KUMF-tə-bl (তিন)। vegetable = VEJ-tə-bl (তিন)। chocolate = CHOK-lət (দুই)। restaurant = RES-tront। interesting = IN-tres-ting। temperature = TEM-prə-chə। determine = dəTERmin (শেষে 'মাইন' নয়)। colonel = KER-nl। এগুলোর প্রতিটি বানান থেকে অনুমান করা যায় না, তাই একবার করে শুনে নেওয়া ছাড়া উপায় নেই। চতুর্থ দল — ধ্বনির বদলি, যেগুলো নিয়ে অন্য পাতায় বিস্তারিত আছে, তবু এখানে মনে করিয়ে দেওয়া দরকার। v বনাম w (very / worry), z বনাম j (zero / hero-র পাশে zoo, আর is, was, because-এর ভেতরে লুকানো /z/), s বনাম sh (sun / shun), th (three / tree)।

Examples

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

  • Saying 'Wednesday' as 'ওয়েড্‌নেসডে' with every letter.

Say 'ওয়েন্‌জ্‌ডে' — the first 'd' is silent.

English keeps silent letters in the spelling but drops them in speech.

  • Stretching 'comfortable' into four syllables: 'কম্‌ফোর্‌ট্যা-বল'.

    Compress it to three: 'কামফ্‌-টে-বল'.

English swallows the middle syllable; the natural form is shorter than the spelling.

  • Pronouncing 'v' and 'w' the same, so 'vest' and 'west' sound alike.

For 'v' bite the lower lip with the top teeth; for 'w' round the lips with no teeth.

Bangla has no separate /v/ and /w/, so learners merge them; English keeps them distinct.

  • Sounding the silent letters in 'receipt' and 'island': 'রিসিপ্ট', 'ইজল্যান্ড'.

    Drop them: 'রিসীট', 'আইল্যান্ড'.

The 'p' in receipt and the 's' in island are never pronounced.

Tipsটিপস

  • Learn each tricky word as a sound, not as its spelling — memorise 'Wednesday' as 'WENZ-day'. প্রতিটি কঠিন শব্দ বানান নয়, ধ্বনি হিসেবে শিখুন — 'Wednesday'-কে 'WENZ-day' হিসেবে মনে রাখুন।
  • Mark the stressed syllable in capitals when you note a word: 'com-FORT... no, COMF-ta-ble'. শব্দ টুকে রাখার সময় stressed syllable বড় হরফে চিহ্নিত করুন: 'COMF-ta-ble'।
  • Drill 'v' vs 'w' as a pair — 'vest/west', 'vine/wine' — feeling your teeth touch the lip only for 'v'. 'v' ও 'w' জোড়া ধরে অনুশীলন করুন — 'vest/west', 'vine/wine' — শুধু 'v'-তে দাঁত ঠোঁটে লাগছে অনুভব করুন।
  • Keep a short list of your own problem words and check them in a dictionary that plays audio. নিজের সমস্যার শব্দগুলোর একটি ছোট তালিকা রাখুন এবং অডিও শোনায় এমন অভিধানে যাচাই করুন।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা

Why are some English words spelled so differently from how they sound?

English kept old spellings even after pronunciation changed, so many words carry silent letters (the 'k' in 'knife', the 'd' in 'Wednesday'). You simply learn the spoken form separately from the spelling.

Why do Bangla speakers mix up 'v' and 'w'?

Bangla does not have separate /v/ and /w/ sounds, so learners often use one for both. Fix it by feeling the contact: /v/ presses the top teeth on the lower lip, while /w/ just rounds the lips.

What is the fastest way to fix a word I keep saying wrong?

Learn it as a small sound-chunk with the stress marked, like 'COMF-ta-ble', and repeat it aloud a few times a day. Checking an audio dictionary once confirms the correct form for good.
