Long and Short Vowels in English
Long and Short Vowels in English
Introduction
The sentence a Bangladeshi office hears most often, and gets wrong most often, is this one: 'I want to take leave.' Said with a short vowel it becomes 'I want to take live', and the manager blinks. Bangla writes হ্রস্ব ই and দীর্ঘ ঈ but says them identically, so length has never once changed a meaning in your first language. In English it changes the word, and this is the pair that does it in real life.
বাংলাদেশের অফিসে সবচেয়ে বেশি বলা এবং সবচেয়ে বেশি ভুল হওয়া বাক্যটা এই — 'I want to take leave.' ছোট স্বর দিয়ে বললে সেটা হয়ে যায় 'I want to take live', আর ম্যানেজার এক মুহূর্ত থেমে যান।
Definition
The names are misleading. A 'long' vowel is not mainly a held vowel — it is a tense one, made with the tongue pushed further and the muscles tightened (/iː/ sheep, /uː/ fool, /ɑː/ car). A 'short' vowel is a lax one, made with everything relaxed and the tongue nearer the centre (/ɪ/ ship, /ʊ/ full, /ʌ/ cut). Length usually follows tension, but tension is the real difference.
Bangla Explanation
তাই beat-এর /iː/ আসলে bead-এর /iː/-এর চেয়ে ছোট, যদিও দুটোই 'long vowel'। fill / feel — 'Please feel the form' শুনতে অদ্ভুত লাগে। sit / seat — 'Please sit' আর 'Please seat' এক নয়। ship / sheep, bit / beat, it / eat, is / ease, hit / heat, slip / sleep। তারপর ছোট বাক্যে বসান: 'I live in Dhaka.' / 'I leave at five.'

Common Mistakes
Pronouncing 'ship' and 'sheep' exactly the same.
Make 'sheep' longer and tenser, with wider lips than 'ship'.
The length and tension carry the meaning; identical vowels merge two different words.
Saying 'beach' with a short vowel so it sounds like a rude word.
Hold the long /iː/ clearly: 'beeeach'.
A short vowel here changes the word entirely, so the long vowel matters a lot.
Treating length as the only difference and keeping the same mouth shape.
Change the mouth too: long vowels are tenser, short vowels more relaxed.
English long and short vowels differ in tongue position, not just duration.
Making every vowel medium-length, as in Bangla.
Commit to clearly short or clearly long for each word.
A neutral middle length leaves the listener unsure which word you mean.
Tips
- Practise in minimal pairs — 'ship/sheep', 'full/fool' — so your ear learns the contrast, not just single words.
- For long vowels, gently stretch the sound and widen or round your lips a little more.
- For short vowels, keep the mouth relaxed and cut the sound off quickly. — short vowel-
- Clap once for a short vowel and twice for a long one while you practise, to feel the timing.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a long and a short vowel?
A short vowel (ship, full) is quick and relaxed; a long vowel (sheep, fool) is held longer and made with tenser muscles. In English the difference can change the meaning of the word.
Why do these vowels matter so much for Bangla speakers?
Bangla does not use vowel length to separate words the way English does, so learners often say pairs like 'ship' and 'sheep' the same. Practising minimal pairs trains both your ear and your mouth to keep them apart.
Is a long vowel just a short vowel said slowly?
Not quite. Length is a big clue, but long and short vowels also use slightly different tongue and lip positions. Change the mouth shape as well as the timing for the clearest result.
