Introductionভূমিকা

A silent letter feels like a trick only until you remember that Bangla plays the same game. We write শ, ষ and স and say one sound for all three. We write ণ and ন and say one. We write রাত and do not pronounce the অ that the letter র carries. Bangla spelling, like English spelling, is a record of history, not a recording of speech. Once a student accepts that, silent letters stop being a mystery and become a short list of patterns.

Silent letter জিনিসটা ততক্ষণই অদ্ভুত লাগে, যতক্ষণ মনে না পড়ে যে বাংলাও ঠিক এই খেলাটাই খেলে। আমরা লিখি শ, ষ, স — বলি একটাই ধ্বনি। লিখি ণ আর ন — বলি একটাই। 'রাত' লিখি, অথচ 'র'-এর সঙ্গে যে অন্তর্নিহিত 'অ' আছে সেটা উচ্চারণই করি না। বাংলা বানানও ইংরেজি বানানের মতোই ইতিহাসের হিসাব রাখে, উচ্চারণের রেকর্ড নয়। এইটুকু মেনে নিলেই silent letter আর রহস্য থাকে না — কয়েকটা প্যাটার্নের তালিকা হয়ে যায়।

A silent letter is one that the spelling keeps but the mouth skips. Most of them are not random: English froze its spelling around the fifteenth century and then went on changing its pronunciation for another four hundred years, so the letter usually marks a sound that really was there once — the k of know, the gh of night, the b of comb.

Silent letter মানে এমন বর্ণ যা বানান ধরে রেখেছে কিন্তু মুখ এড়িয়ে যায়। এগুলোর বেশির ভাগই এলোমেলো নয়: ইংরেজির বানান পঞ্চদশ শতকের দিকে থিতু হয়ে যায়, কিন্তু উচ্চারণ তার পরেও চারশো বছর ধরে বদলাতে থাকে। তাই বর্ণটা সাধারণত এমন এক ধ্বনির চিহ্ন, যা সত্যিই একসময় উচ্চারিত হতো — know-এর k, night-এর gh, comb-এর b।

আটটা প্যাটার্ন জানলে ইংরেজির প্রায় সব silent letter ঢাকা পড়ে যায়। এক, শব্দের শুরুতে kn — k চুপ: know, knife, knee, knock, knot, knowledge। দুই, শব্দের শুরুতে wr — w চুপ: write, wrong, wrist, wrap, wretched। তিন, শেষে mb — b চুপ: comb, thumb, climb, lamb, bomb, tomb। চার, শেষে mn — n চুপ: autumn, column, hymn। পাঁচ, gh — হয় চুপ (night, light, though, daughter), নয়তো /f/ (enough, cough, laugh)। ছয়, l চুপ থাকে -alk, -alf, -alm, -ould-এ: talk, walk, half, calm, palm, would, could, should। সাত, শুরুতে h চুপ কয়েকটি শব্দে: hour, honest, honour, heir। আট, শুরুতে ps- আর pn- — p চুপ: psychology, psychiatrist, pneumonia। এবার সেই শব্দগুলো, যেগুলো বাংলাদেশে সবচেয়ে বেশি ভুল হয়, কারণ এগুলো লেখায় দেখেছি অনেক বেশি, শুনেছি অনেক কম। Wednesday — প্রথম d চুপ, শব্দটা দুই beat: WENZ-day। Island — s চুপ: EYE-lənd। Receipt — p চুপ: ri-SEET। Business — মাঝের i চুপ, দুই beat: BIZ-nis। Vegetable — মাঝের e চুপ, তিন beat: VEJ-tə-bl। Comfortable — KUMF-tə-bl, চার নয় তিন beat। Salmon — l চুপ: SAM-ən। Debt আর doubt — b চুপ। Castle, listen, often, whistle — t চুপ। Subtle — SUT-l। এখানে একটা সতর্কতা দরকার, কারণ 'নীরব' কথাটা প্রায়ই বাড়াবাড়ি করে বোঝা হয়। বর্ণটা চুপ, কিন্তু তার প্রতিবেশী স্বরের ওপর প্রভাব রেখে যায়। 'night'-এর gh উচ্চারিত হয় না, তবু সে-ই কারণেই i-টা 'ই' না হয়ে 'আই' হয়েছে। 'talk'-এর l চুপ, কিন্তু a-টাকে সে টেনে 'ও'-এর দিকে নিয়ে গেছে (TAWK, TAK নয়)। তাই বর্ণটা মুছে ফেলে পড়লে চলবে না; ধরে নিন সে ছুটিতে আছে, বাড়ি ছেড়ে যায়নি। একটা অভ্যাস এই পুরো সমস্যাটার গোড়া কেটে দেয়। বাংলাদেশে আমরা নতুন ইংরেজি শব্দ প্রায় সবসময় চোখে দেখি আগে, কানে শুনি অনেক পরে — বই, প্রশ্নপত্র, নোট, ফেসবুক পোস্ট। ফলে শব্দটা মাথায় ঢোকার সময় সঙ্গে একটা বানান-ভিত্তিক উচ্চারণও ঢুকে যায়, আর দশ বছর ধরে সেটাই থেকে যায়। তাই নতুন শব্দ নোটবুকে তোলার সময় বানানের পাশে দুটো জিনিস লিখে রাখুন: কয়টা beat, আর কোন beat-এ জোর। যেমন — receipt (2, ri-SEET)। এই ছোট অভ্যাসটাই আপনার নীরব বর্ণের সমস্যা প্রায় সম্পূর্ণ শেষ করে দেবে।

In these words the h is silent, so 'an' is used before them: an hour, an honest man.
