How to Count Syllables in English

A syllable is one vowel sound, not one written vowel — which is why 'worked' is one syllable and 'wanted' is two, though both end in -ed. Count the vowel sounds you actually say, and the answer is almost always right.

• ❌ counting 'film' and 'school' as two syllables

  ✅ film and school are one syllable each

  A vowel gets slipped into the consonant cluster (filim, iskool), and the extra vowel creates an extra beat that English does not have.

• ❌ "work-ed", "play-ed" as two syllables

  ✅ worked, played — one syllable each

  -ed becomes a separate syllable only after a t or d sound (wanted, needed). Everywhere else it is just a /t/ or /d/ attached to the word.

• ❌ saying 'watches' and 'buses' as one beat

  ✅ wat-ches, bu-ses — two beats

  After a hissing sound — s, z, sh, ch, x, and the j sound of ge/dge — the -es ending is a full extra syllable, /ɪz/: buses, boxes, watches, changes.

• ❌ counting every written vowel: be-au-ti-ful

  ✅ BEAU-ti-ful — three syllables

  Two or three vowel letters together often spell one sound, and a syllable is one sound, not one letter.
