The -ed ending on past-tense verbs is not always pronounced 'ed'. It has three sounds — /t/, /d/ and /ɪd/ — and choosing the right one makes your English sound natural instead of robotic.

(৩) শেষ ধ্বনি /t/ বা /d/ হলে -ed শোনায় /ɪd/ এবং একটি বাড়তি syllable যোগ হয়: wanted = 'wan-tid', needed = 'nee-did'. বাংলাভাষীদের সবচেয়ে বড় ভুল — সব -ed কে 'এড' বলে আলাদা syllable বানানো (worked কে 'work-ed' বলা)। শুধু ৩ নম্বর ক্ষেত্রেই বাড়তি syllable হয়।

wanted said as 'wantt' (one syllable)

After a t or d sound you must add the /ɪd/ syllable, or two words like 'want' and 'wanted' sound identical.

The final sound is voiceless /p/, so -ed is /t/ with no extra syllable.

- Feel your throat: if the last sound before -ed makes your throat vibrate (voiced), use /d/; if not (voiceless), use /t/. — গলায় হাত রাখুন: -ed এর আগের ধ্বনিতে কম্পন হলে (voiced) /d/, না হলে (voiceless) /t/।
- Only add a whole extra syllable when the verb already ends in a t or d sound (want → wanted, need → needed). — verb আগে থেকেই t বা d ধ্বনিতে শেষ হলেই কেবল বাড়তি syllable যোগ করুন (want → wanted)।
- Say the base verb and the past form back to back — 'work, workt' — to hear that no vowel is added. — base ও past রূপ পরপর বলুন — 'work, workt' — বুঝবেন কোনো স্বর যোগ হয়নি।
- Spelling never decides the sound — the sound just before -ed does. — বানান নয়, -ed এর ঠিক আগের ধ্বনিই উচ্চারণ ঠিক করে।

Why is -ed sometimes not a separate syllable?
Because -ed is really just a /t/ or /d/ sound glued to the verb. It only becomes a full syllable (/ɪd/) after verbs that already end in a t or d sound, like wanted or needed.
