Consonant Clusters in English
Consonant Clusters (পরপর বসা ব্যঞ্জন)
Introductionভূমিকা
A consonant cluster is two or three consonant sounds said together with no vowel between them — the sk of school, the str of street, the lm of film. Spoken Bangla does not start a word with sk, st or sp, so we slip in a small vowel and school becomes 'iskool'. The fix is to run the consonants together in one push of air.
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
A consonant cluster is a group of two or more consonant sounds in the same syllable, with no vowel sound between them. English allows them at the beginning (spring, street), in the middle (instrument) and at the end (asked, months).
একই syllable-এর ভিতরে মাঝে কোনো স্বরধ্বনি ছাড়া দুই বা তার বেশি ব্যঞ্জনধ্বনি একসাথে বসলে তাকে consonant cluster বলে। ইংরেজিতে এটি শব্দের শুরুতে (spring, street), মাঝে (instrument) ও শেষে (asked, months) — তিন জায়গাতেই হয়।
Bangla Explanation
Examplesউদাহরণ
- The school is close to the station.স্কুলটা স্টেশনের কাছেই। — school ও station, দুটোরই শুরুতে s + ব্যঞ্জন; সামনে 'ই' বসাবে না।
- Karim bought a blue shirt from the street market.করিম রাস্তার বাজার থেকে একটা নীল শার্ট কিনেছে। — street-এ str তিনটি ব্যঞ্জন একসাথে, এক ধাক্কায়।
- Please speak slowly.দয়া করে আস্তে বলুন। — speak-এ sp, slowly-তে sl; দুটোই এক শ্বাসে।
- The film starts at seven.ছবিটা সাতটায় শুরু। — film এক তালের শব্দ ('ফিলিম' নয়), starts-এর শেষে rts।
- Give me a glass of water.এক গ্লাস পানি দিন। — glass-এ g থেকে সোজা l-এ; 'গেলাস' হলে এক syllable বেড়ে যায়।
- I asked the CNG driver to stop.আমি সিএনজি চালককে থামতে বললাম। — asked শেষ হয় skt দিয়ে, তবু এক syllable।
- The train to Khulna is late today.খুলনার ট্রেন আজ দেরি করছে। — train-এ tr জোড়া, মাঝে কোনো স্বর নেই।
Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
"iskool" for school, "istation" for station
school, station — start the s straight into the next consonant
Spoken Bangla breaks up an s before k, t or p at the start of a word by adding a small 'i' in front. English slides the s directly into the k or t with nothing between.
"filim" for film, "gelash" for glass
film, glass — one syllable each
A helping vowel gets inserted between the two consonants, turning a one-beat English word into two beats.
"e-state" when you mean "state"
state (condition) vs estate (property, housing area)
The extra vowel in front is not just an accent here — it makes a different English word with a different meaning.
"ask-ed" or "askt-uh" for asked
asked — one syllable, ending /skt/
-ed adds a syllable only after a t or d sound. After k it is just a /t/ glued to the cluster.
Tipsটিপস
- Hold the first sound: sssss…kool, sssss…treet. Then shorten the hold until the word sounds normal. — প্রথম ধ্বনি টেনে ধরুন: sssss…kool, sssss…treet। তারপর ধীরে ধীরে টানটা ছোট করুন।
- Clap once per word: school, street, film, asked are all one clap. — প্রতি শব্দে একবার তালি দিন: school, street, film, asked — সবই এক তালি।
- Practise the pairs state/estate and sport/support — the second word of each pair is what the extra vowel turns your word into. — জোড়া অনুশীলন করুন: state/estate, sport/support — বাড়তি স্বর বসালে প্রথমটা দ্বিতীয়টা হয়ে যায়।
- For final clusters, keep the tongue moving without stopping: fi-l-m, si-x-th, mon-th-s. — শেষের cluster-এ জিভ থামাবেন না, চলতেই থাকবে: fi-l-m, si-x-th, mon-th-s।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা
Why do Bengali speakers say 'iskool' instead of 'school'?
Because an sk, st or sp start does not sit comfortably in spoken Bangla — a few clusters such as স্নান and স্ত্রী survive, but s before k, t or p gets broken up. The mouth adds a small vowel in front to make the start sayable, which is normal in Bangla but adds a syllable to the English word.
Is it wrong to say ইস্কুল or ফিলিম?
Not in Bangla — those are established Bangla forms and perfectly correct when you are speaking Bangla. They only cause trouble inside an English sentence, where the extra syllable can make the word hard for a listener to place.
Which English clusters are hardest for Bangla speakers?
Two groups: s at the start of a word before another consonant (school, street, speak, sky), and long endings of three or four sounds (asked, texts, months, twelfths). Both are best practised slowly first, then at normal speed.
