English Intonation Basics
Introduction
Intonation is the music of English — the way your voice rises and falls across a sentence. Even with perfect words, flat or wrongly-timed intonation can make you sound unnatural or unsure. Bangla and English carry this 'music' differently, so learning a few simple patterns makes your English clearer and more confident.
Definition
Intonation is the rise and fall of the voice's pitch. As a rule of thumb, statements and wh-questions fall at the end, while yes/no questions rise. Stress — saying the important word louder and longer — works together with intonation to carry meaning.
Bangla Explanation
এক — সাধারণ বাক্য (statement) শেষে কণ্ঠ নিচে নামে: 'I live in Dhaka.' ↓ দুই — yes/no প্রশ্ন (উত্তর হ্যাঁ বা না) শেষে কণ্ঠ ওপরে ওঠে: 'Do you live in Dhaka?' ↑ তিন — wh-প্রশ্ন (what, where, why, how) শেষে নিচে নামে: 'Where do you live?'
Examples
- I live in Dhaka. ↓ — voice falls at the end (statement)."I live in Dhaka." ↓ —
- Do you speak English? ↑ — voice rises (yes/no question)."Do you speak English?"
- Where do you work? ↓ — voice falls (wh-question)."Where do you work?"
- Really? ↑ — a rise shows surprise or a question."Really?" ↑ —
- I bought tea ↑, rice ↑, and oil ↓. — rise on each item, fall on the last."tea ↑, rice ↑, and oil ↓" —
- I never said she stole it. — stress a different word to change the meaning."I never said she stole it."
- It's a GREEN car. — stress the new/important word."It's a GREEN car." —
Common Mistakes
Do you speak English? ↓ (falling)
Do you speak English? ↑ (rising)
Yes/no questions rise at the end. A falling tune can make a question sound like a flat command.
saying every word with equal force
stress the important word, weaken the rest
English is stress-timed. Flat, equal stress on each word sounds robotic and hides the key information.
Where do you live? ↑ (rising)
Where do you live? ↓ (falling)
Wh-questions normally fall at the end. Rising makes them sound uncertain or incomplete.
keeping a flat, level pitch all the time
let the voice rise and fall naturally
A monotone sounds bored or unsure. Movement in pitch signals meaning and confidence.
Tips
- Remember the rule: statements and wh-questions fall ↓; yes/no questions rise ↑.
- Find the most important word in each sentence and make it a little louder and longer. —
- In a list, let your voice rise on each item and fall on the last one. —
- Copy natural speech: listen to a short clip, then imitate its rise and fall like a song. —

What is intonation in simple words?
Intonation is the up-and-down movement of your voice — the 'music' of a sentence. It shows whether you are stating, asking or feeling surprised, even when the words stay the same.
Why does my English sound flat or unnatural?
Usually because the pitch stays level and every word gets equal stress. English rises and falls and leans on key words. Adding that movement, and stressing the important word, makes you sound far more natural.
How can I practise intonation on my own?
Pick a short clip of natural English, listen for where the voice rises and falls, then imitate it out loud like copying a tune. Recording yourself and comparing to the original is one of the fastest ways to improve.
