Emphatic Stress in English
Emphatic Stress (বাক্যে বিশেষ জোর)
Introductionভূমিকা
In English you can keep every word of a sentence the same and still change its meaning — just by saying one word louder, longer and higher. 'I didn't say RAHIM took the money' and 'I didn't SAY Rahim took the money' are two different statements. Bangla does this work with a particle like ই or তো; English does it with the voice.
ইংরেজিতে বাক্যের একটি শব্দও না বদলে কেবল একটি শব্দ জোরে, লম্বা ও উঁচু সুরে বলে অর্থ পাল্টে দেওয়া যায়। 'I didn't say RAHIM took the money' আর 'I didn't SAY Rahim took the money' — দুটো আলাদা কথা। বাংলায় এই কাজটা করে ই বা তো-এর মতো শব্দাংশ; ইংরেজিতে করে কণ্ঠস্বর।
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
Emphatic stress (also called contrastive stress) is extra force given to one chosen word to correct, contrast or highlight it. It overrides the normal pattern, in which stress falls on the content words and usually peaks near the end of the sentence.
Emphatic stress (বা contrastive stress) হলো কোনো একটি নির্দিষ্ট শব্দে বাড়তি জোর — সংশোধন, তুলনা বা গুরুত্ব বোঝাতে। এটি স্বাভাবিক নিয়মকে ছাপিয়ে যায়, যেখানে জোর পড়ে অর্থবাহী শব্দে এবং সাধারণত বাক্যের শেষদিকে সবচেয়ে বেশি।
Bangla Explanation
এই একটাই বাক্য ছয়ভাবে বলে দেখুন — 'I didn't say Rahim took the money.' কেউ ভুল শুনলে গোটা বাক্য আবার বলার দরকার নেই — কেবল যে অংশটা ভুল, সেটিতে জোর দিন: 'The class is at TEN, not at nine.' 'I said fifTEEN taka, not FIFty.'
Examplesউদাহরণ
- I didn't say Rahim took the money. (stress on I)জোর 'I'-তে — মানে: কথাটা বলেছে অন্য কেউ, আমি নই।
- I didn't SAY Rahim took the money.জোর 'say'-তে — মানে: মুখে বলিনি, হয়তো ইঙ্গিত করেছি।
- I didn't say RAHIM took the money.জোর 'Rahim'-এ — মানে: নিয়েছে অন্য কেউ, রহিম নয়।
- I didn't say Rahim took the MONEY.জোর 'money'-তে — মানে: টাকা নয়, অন্য কিছু নিয়েছে।
- The class is at TEN, not at nine.ক্লাস দশটায়, নয়টায় নয়। — শুধু ভুল অংশটিতে জোর।
- I said fifTEEN taka, not FIFty.আমি বলেছি পনেরো টাকা, পঞ্চাশ নয়। — এখানে জোর শব্দের ভেতরের syllable-এ।
- It's MY bag, not yours.এটা আমার ব্যাগ, তোমার নয়। — 'my'-তে জোর দিলে মালিকানার তুলনাটা স্পষ্ট হয়।
Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
adding 'only' to translate the Bangla ই: 'Only I went'
I went — with the stress on 'I'
'Only' adds an exclusion that may not be meant. English carries that emphasis in the voice, without an extra word.
saying the whole sentence louder to show emphasis
raise one word above the others
Emphasis is a contrast. If everything is loud, nothing stands out and the listener cannot tell which part you are correcting.
repeating the entire sentence when someone mishears one detail
'No, at TEN' — stress only the corrected word
Native listeners expect the new or corrected information to carry the stress; repeating everything sounds like a different message.
stressing the last word by habit in every sentence
move the stress to whichever word carries the new information
The end of the sentence is the default position, not a fixed rule. Contrast and correction pull the stress elsewhere.
Tipsটিপস
- Make the emphasised word louder, longer and higher in pitch — all three together, not just louder. — জোর দেওয়া শব্দটি জোরে, লম্বা ও উঁচু সুরে বলুন — তিনটিই একসাথে, শুধু জোরে নয়।
- Let the words after the stressed one drop away. The contrast comes from the fall as much as from the rise. — জোর দেওয়া শব্দের পরেরগুলো নিচে নেমে যাক। ওঠার মতো নামাটাও তুলনাটা তৈরি করে।
- Practise with corrections, because that is where you need it most: prices, times, names, phone numbers. — সংশোধন দিয়ে অনুশীলন করুন — দাম, সময়, নাম, ফোন নম্বর; এখানেই এটি সবচেয়ে বেশি লাগে।
- Say one sentence six times, stressing a different word each time, and say the meaning aloud after each one. — একটি বাক্য ছয়বার বলুন, প্রতিবার আলাদা শব্দে জোর দিয়ে, আর প্রতিবার অর্থটা মুখে বলুন।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা
What is the difference between sentence stress and emphatic stress?
Sentence stress is the default pattern — content words strong, function words weak. Emphatic stress overrides that default to mark one word as new, corrected or contrasted, and it can land on a word that would normally be weak, such as 'did' or 'I'.
Can emphatic stress fall on a small grammar word?
Yes, and that is one of its uses. 'I DID pay the bill' stresses an auxiliary that would otherwise be weak, and the effect is to deny an accusation.
How do I show emphasis in writing?
In writing you cannot use the voice, so English uses word choice and structure instead — 'It was Rahim who took it', 'I did tell you' — or italics in informal text. Capital letters work in a message to a friend but look shouted in a formal email.
