Sentence Stress in English
ইংরেজিতে সেন্টেন্স স্ট্রেস
Introductionভূমিকা
English does not say every word with equal weight. Important words are stressed — louder, longer, clearer — while small grammar words shrink. This rhythm, called sentence stress, is what makes English sound like English.
ইংরেজিতে প্রতিটি শব্দ সমান জোরে বলা হয় না। গুরুত্বপূর্ণ শব্দে stress পড়ে — জোরে, লম্বা, স্পষ্ট — আর ছোট grammar শব্দ ছোট হয়ে যায়। এই ছন্দকেই বলে sentence stress, আর এটাই ইংরেজিকে ইংরেজির মতো শোনায়।
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
Sentence stress is the pattern of strong and weak words in a sentence. Content words (nouns, main verbs, adjectives, adverbs) are stressed; function words (articles, prepositions, pronouns, auxiliaries) are weak.
Sentence stress হলো বাক্যে জোরালো ও দুর্বল শব্দের বিন্যাস। Content শব্দ (noun, মূল verb, adjective, adverb) জোরে বলা হয়; function শব্দ (article, preposition, pronoun, auxiliary) দুর্বল থাকে।
Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা
মূল নিয়ম: content শব্দ জোরে, function শব্দ হালকা। Content শব্দ হলো যেগুলো অর্থ বহন করে — noun (book, market), মূল verb (want, go), adjective (good, red), adverb (quickly)। Function শব্দ হলো ছোট ব্যাকরণিক শব্দ — a, the, to, of, is, are, he, and — এগুলো দ্রুত ও দুর্বল করে বলা হয়, প্রায়ই 'schwa' (অস্পষ্ট 'অ') ধ্বনিতে। যেমন 'I WANT to GO to the MARKET' — বড় হরফের শব্দগুলো জোরে, ছোটগুলো গিলে। বাংলা প্রতিটি syllable প্রায় সমান সময়ে বলে (syllable-timed), কিন্তু ইংরেজি stressed শব্দের মধ্যে সমান সময় রাখে (stress-timed), তাই মাঝের ছোট শব্দগুলো চেপে যায়। এছাড়া গুরুত্ব বোঝাতে stress সরানো যায়: 'I didn't say HE stole it' মানে অন্য কেউ, কিন্তু 'I didn't say he STOLE it' মানে অন্য কিছু করেছে।
Examplesউদাহরণ
- I WANT to GO to the MARKET. (stress the content words)WANT, GO, MARKET জোরে; to, the গিলে যায়।
- She's a REALLY GOOD TEACHER. (adjectives + noun stressed)REALLY, GOOD, TEACHER জোরে; she's, a দুর্বল।
- We're GOING to LONDON on FRIDAY. (nouns + main verb)GOING, LONDON, FRIDAY জোরে; we're, to, on হালকা।
- He CAN'T FIND his KEYS. (negative + verb + noun)CAN'T, FIND, KEYS জোরে; his দুর্বল।
- I didn't say HE stole it. (extra stress on 'he' = someone else)HE-তে বাড়তি জোর মানে অন্য কেউ চুরি করেছে।
- I didn't say he STOLE it. (stress on 'stole' = a different action)STOLE-এ জোর মানে চুরি নয়, অন্য কিছু হয়েছে।
- The 'to' in 'want to' weakens to 'tuh' (wanna-like)'want to'-তে 'to' দুর্বল হয়ে 'ট' (tuh) শোনায়।
- CALL me when you GET HOME. (verbs + noun stressed)CALL, GET, HOME জোরে; me, when, you হালকা।
Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
giving every word equal weight
stress content words, weaken function words
Even stress makes English sound flat and robotic; the strong/weak contrast carries meaning.
stressing small words like 'to', 'the', 'is'
shrink them to a quick, soft schwa sound
Function words are almost never stressed in neutral speech; stressing them sounds unnatural.
pronouncing 'to', 'for', 'of' in their full 'strong' form every time
reduce them — 'to' → 'tuh', 'for' → 'fer', 'of' → 'uv'
In connected speech these weak forms keep the rhythm smooth and fast.
keeping the same stress even when meaning changes
move the stress to the word you want to highlight
English uses extra stress for contrast and focus; the same words can mean different things.
Tipsটিপস
- Underline the content words in a sentence first, then say only those loudly and let the rest fall soft. — প্রথমে content শব্দে দাগ দিন, শুধু সেগুলো জোরে বলুন, বাকিটা হালকা রাখুন।
- Tap the table on each stressed word — feel the steady beat between strong words. — প্রতিটি stressed শব্দে টেবিলে টোকা দিন — জোরালো শব্দগুলোর মধ্যে সমান beat অনুভব করুন।
- Practise weak forms: say 'want to' as 'wanna', 'going to' as 'gonna' (informal) to feel the reduction. — Weak form অনুশীলন করুন: 'want to' → 'wanna', 'going to' → 'gonna' (অনানুষ্ঠানিক) বলে দুর্বলতা টের পান।
- To show focus, deliberately stress one word and notice how the meaning shifts. — গুরুত্ব বোঝাতে ইচ্ছা করে একটি শব্দে জোর দিন এবং অর্থ কীভাবে বদলায় লক্ষ্য করুন।

What is sentence stress in English?
It is the pattern of strong and weak words in a sentence. Content words (nouns, main verbs, adjectives, adverbs) are stressed, while small grammar words are said quickly and softly.
Why do Bangla speakers find English rhythm hard?
Bangla is roughly syllable-timed, giving each syllable similar length. English is stress-timed, squeezing weak words between stressed ones, so learners must practise reducing the small words.
Can sentence stress change the meaning?
Yes. Moving the stress highlights a different word: 'I didn't say HE stole it' points at another person, while 'I didn't say he STOLE it' points at a different action.
