Traffic rules are the laws that govern how people and vehicles move on a road, and they exist for one reason: a road is shared, and it only works if everybody behaves predictably. The main rules are simple. Keep left, stop on red and go on green, cross at the zebra crossing or the footbridge, do not overtake on a bend, give way to an ambulance, wear a helmet on a motorcycle, and do not use a phone while driving. Almost everyone knows them and almost nobody follows them. Buses race each other for passengers and stop wherever they like, motorcycles ride on the footpath, pedestrians cross under a footbridge rather than over it, and licences can be obtained without a proper test. Thousands of people are killed on our roads every year and many more are disabled, and most of those deaths were preventable. Enforcement matters more than campaigns: cameras, real driving tests, penalties for the bus company rather than only the driver, and safe crossings that are actually usable. But a rule kept only when a policeman is watching is not a rule, and that habit has to change in each of us.
