Our roads were built for a much smaller city, and the number of cars, buses, rickshaws and motorcycles grows every year. Many drivers ignore lanes and signals, buses stop wherever a passenger raises a hand, and footpaths taken over by hawkers push pedestrians onto the road. Unfit vehicles break down in the middle of busy streets, and digging for water or gas lines closes lanes for months. The losses are heavy. Office-goers reach late, students miss classes and examinations, and patients in ambulances sometimes die before they reach hospital. Millions of working hours are wasted every day, and idling engines pour smoke into air that is already dirty. The remedies need patience rather than cleverness: wider and better-maintained roads, a proper public bus service, strict enforcement of traffic rules, free footpaths, and the discipline of ordinary drivers who stop treating every gap as an opportunity.
