A road accident is a sudden collision on the road that kills or injures people and damages property. In Bangladesh it has become one of the commonest causes of death among the young, and hardly a day passes without a report of a bus overturning or a truck crushing a motorcycle. The causes are known to everyone who uses our highways. Many drivers hold licences they never earned, work fourteen hours without rest and race each other for passengers. Vehicles are old and unfit, with worn tyres and failing brakes. Roads are narrow, badly repaired and often unlit, and there are no separate lanes for slow traffic, so a rickshaw and a bus share the same strip of tarmac. Passengers themselves take risks, riding on rooftops and crossing highways rather than using a footbridge. The effects fall hardest on ordinary families. A young earner dies and a whole household loses its income; a survivor may live with a broken spine and medical bills for life. Fines and speed limits exist but are rarely enforced. Proper driver training and licensing, regular fitness tests, separate lanes for slow vehicles and enforcement that does not stop after a headline would save thousands of lives.

সড়ক দুর্ঘটনা মানে রাস্তায় হঠাৎ সংঘর্ষ, যাতে মানুষ মারা যায় বা আহত হয় এবং সম্পদ নষ্ট হয়। বাংলাদেশে এটি তরুণদের মৃত্যুর অন্যতম প্রধান কারণ — বাস উল্টে যাওয়া বা ট্রাকের নিচে মোটরসাইকেল চাপা পড়ার খবর ছাড়া দিন প্রায় যায় না। কারণগুলো মহাসড়ক ব্যবহারকারী সবাই জানেন: অনেক চালকের লাইসেন্স অর্জিত নয়, তাঁরা বিশ্রাম ছাড়া চোদ্দ ঘণ্টা চালান, যাত্রীর জন্য একে অপরের সাথে পাল্লা দেন। গাড়ি পুরোনো ও ফিটনেসহীন, টায়ার ক্ষয়ে যাওয়া, ব্রেক দুর্বল। রাস্তা সরু, ভাঙা, অনেক জায়গায় অন্ধকার, ধীরগতির যানের আলাদা লেন নেই — রিকশা আর বাস একই পিচে চলে। যাত্রীরাও ঝুঁকি নেন — ছাদে চড়া, ফুটওভারব্রিজ বাদ দিয়ে মহাসড়ক পার হওয়া।

কারণগুলো **তিন ভাগে** সাজালে উত্তরটা সাথে সাথে গোছানো লাগে: চালক, যানবাহন, রাস্তা — আর চতুর্থ হিসেবে যাত্রী নিজে। যাত্রীর দায়িত্বের কথাটা প্রায় কেউ লেখে না, অথচ ছাদে চড়া বা মহাসড়ক পার হওয়া বাস্তব কারণ। ক্রম: (১) সংজ্ঞা; (২) কতটা সাধারণ; (৩) কারণ — চার ভাগে; (৪) ক্ষতি — **একটি পরিবারের দৃষ্টিকোণ থেকে**, শুধু সংখ্যা নয়; (৫) প্রতিকার। 'একজন উপার্জনক্ষম তরুণ মারা গেলে পুরো পরিবার আয় হারায়' — এই বাক্যটা পরিসংখ্যানের চেয়ে বেশি কাজ করে। সংখ্যা লিখতে যাবেন না, ভুল হলে নম্বর যায়।
