Tolerance is accepting that other people may believe, worship, vote and live differently from us without our right to disagree being lost. It is often described as a soft virtue and it is not. Agreeing with somebody costs nothing; tolerance begins exactly where agreement ends. Bangladesh has a long practice of it. Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and Christians live in the same neighbourhoods, join one another's festivals and have done so for centuries, and our Liberation War was fought for a country in which language and neighbourhood mattered more than religion. That practice has been damaged more than once by rumours spread online, by attacks on a minority neighbourhood after a false post, and by people who gain from a quarrel they do not have to live beside. Tolerance is not the same as indifference or approval. A person can believe another is mistaken and still defend his right to say it, and tolerance does not extend to violence, which is a crime rather than an opinion. It is practised in small ways: not repeating an unverified story about a community, correcting a joke in your own circle, and treating a neighbour's festival as a reason to visit.
