Patriotism Paragraph

Patriotism is love for one's own country and the willingness to act for its good. It is one of the noblest human feelings, and in 1971 it made ordinary farmers, students and housewives face a trained army for nine months. But patriotism is not only for a war. In peacetime it is quieter and much harder, because it asks for things nobody applauds. A patriot pays his taxes honestly, does not adulterate the food he sells, does not take a bribe or offer one, keeps his street clean, and does the work he is paid for properly. A doctor who stays in a district hospital and a teacher who teaches without demanding private tuition are doing more for this country than anyone shouting a slogan. Real patriotism also allows criticism. A person who says nothing is wrong here does not love his country; he flatters it. Pointing at corruption, at a broken road or at a failing school is what a person who wants his country to be better actually does. And it must never turn into hatred of another nation, because that is not patriotism at all — it is only pride wearing its name.
