Our school library is a large room on the first floor, next to the teachers' room and facing the field. Steel almirahs stand along three walls, glass-fronted and labelled by subject, and long tables with benches fill the middle. There are about four thousand books: textbooks and reference works, English and Bangla literature, biographies, atlases, science and general knowledge, and a shelf of children's books for the junior classes. Newspapers and a few magazines lie on a rack near the door. A librarian sits at a desk by the entrance with the register, issues two books at a time for a week, and fines a student who keeps one longer. Silence is the only rule anyone enforces. We have one library period a week, and it is honestly not enough — most students only reach the room when a teacher sends them. The library is also the poorest part of many schools: old stock, no new titles for years, and a lock more often than a librarian. A library that stays open, buys something new each year and lets students choose freely does more for reading than any instruction to read more.
