Honesty means saying what is true and doing what is right even when it costs something. That last part is the whole of it, because there is no honesty in telling the truth when the truth happens to be convenient. An honest person does not cheat in an examination even when the invigilator has left the room, does not take what belongs to another, does not give false weight in his shop, and admits a mistake before somebody else discovers it. Honesty is not always rewarded, and pretending that it is does the idea no favours. A dishonest contractor often earns more than an honest one. A student who copies may pass a test the honest student fails. What honesty does give is something the other person never has: the ability to sleep, to be believed, and to be trusted with something that matters. A society without it simply stops working — nobody signs a contract, nobody accepts a certificate, nobody believes a price. Honesty is learnt at home and in small things: returning extra change, keeping a promise nobody would have checked, and admitting the answer you do not know.

'Honesty is the best policy' দিয়ে শুরু করবেন না — এটাই সবচেয়ে বেশি লেখা বাক্য। বরং **সংজ্ঞাটাকে ধারালো করুন**: সততা মানে সত্য বলা যখন তাতে ক্ষতি হয়। ক্রম: (১) সংজ্ঞা; (২) নির্দিষ্ট উদাহরণ — পরীক্ষা, দোকান, ভুল স্বীকার; (৩) **সৎ স্বীকারোক্তি: সততা সবসময় পুরস্কৃত হয় না**; (৪) তবু সততা কী দেয়; (৫) সমাজের দিক; (৬) ছোট জিনিসে শেখা। তৃতীয় অংশটাই সাহসী ও আলাদা। বেশিরভাগ উত্তর দাবি করে সৎ মানুষ সবসময় জেতেন — পরীক্ষক জানেন এটা সত্য নয়। সীমাটা স্বীকার করে তারপর যুক্তি দিলে উত্তরটা অনেক বেশি বিশ্বাসযোগ্য হয়।
