Friendship is a bond of affection between two people who have chosen each other, and that choice is what makes it different from every other relationship. We do not choose our family; we choose our friends, and we go on choosing them every day. A true friend is not the one who agrees with everything. He is the one who tells us the truth when it is unwelcome, who corrects us privately and defends us publicly, and who does not disappear when we have nothing to give. Real friendship is tested only in difficulty. A person in trouble finds out very quickly how many of his friends were friends of his circumstances. False friends are pleasant company while there is money, influence or entertainment, and they are never there at a funeral or a hospital. Friendship also demands something of us. It cannot survive without honesty, without keeping a confidence, and without the willingness to forgive small offences that are not worth the friendship they would cost. One true friend is worth more than a hundred acquaintances, and most people find only two or three in a whole life.
