Hard work is sustained effort towards a purpose, and almost everything of value in a life is bought with it. Talent decides how quickly a person begins; work decides where he finishes. In any class the student who works four hours a day for two years passes the one who was quicker but studied in bursts before examinations, and the same is true of a shop, a farm and a factory. Hard work also produces something besides the result. A person who has finished a difficult thing knows he can finish the next one, and that knowledge is worth more than the marks. But effort alone is not enough, and pretending otherwise is unkind. A student who studies twelve hours a day using the wrong method will be beaten by one who studies four using the right one, and a farmer who works from dawn to dark still loses if the price collapses. Work has to be aimed at something, checked, and corrected. Our country was built by people who worked without complaining — farmers, garment workers, labourers abroad — and what they lacked was rarely effort. It was almost always the chance to use it.

পরিশ্রম মানে একটা উদ্দেশ্যের দিকে ধারাবাহিক চেষ্টা — আর জীবনের মূল্যবান প্রায় সবকিছুই এর বিনিময়ে কেনা। প্রতিভা ঠিক করে কে কত দ্রুত শুরু করবেন; পরিশ্রম ঠিক করে কে কোথায় গিয়ে শেষ করবেন। যেকোনো ক্লাসে দুই বছর ধরে দিনে চার ঘণ্টা পড়া শিক্ষার্থী ছাড়িয়ে যান সেই দ্রুতবুদ্ধি সহপাঠীকে, যিনি পরীক্ষার আগে ঝোঁকে ঝোঁকে পড়েন — দোকান, খেত ও কারখানার ক্ষেত্রেও একই কথা সত্য। পরিশ্রম ফলাফলের বাইরেও কিছু তৈরি করে: যিনি একটা কঠিন কাজ শেষ করেছেন, তিনি জানেন পরেরটাও শেষ করতে পারবেন — আর এই জানাটা নম্বরের চেয়ে দামি। তবে কেবল চেষ্টাই যথেষ্ট নয়, আর তা নয় বলে ভান করাটা নিষ্ঠুরতা। ভুল পদ্ধতিতে দিনে বারো ঘণ্টা পড়া শিক্ষার্থীকে হারিয়ে দেবেন সঠিক পদ্ধতিতে চার ঘণ্টা পড়া একজন।
