Perseverance Paragraph

Perseverance is continuing at something after the first enthusiasm has gone and the result has not yet come. That gap is where most attempts end, and it is why perseverance matters more than talent. A gifted student who stops when a subject becomes difficult is overtaken within a year by an ordinary one who keeps at it, and every class contains an example. Perseverance is not stubbornness. A person who repeats the same failed method a hundred times is not persevering; he is refusing to learn. Real perseverance changes the method and keeps the aim. It also depends on things nobody praises: a routine that does not need enthusiasm, small daily work rather than occasional bursts, and the willingness to be bad at something for a while in front of other people. A boy learning English who is laughed at for his pronunciation and speaks again the next day has more of it than any prize-winner. Nothing worth having in this country — a degree, a skill, a business, a language — arrives in one attempt. Those who get them are usually not the cleverest people in the room but the ones who were still there at the end.

অধ্যবসায় মানে প্রথম উৎসাহ ফুরিয়ে যাওয়ার পরও লেগে থাকা, যখন ফলটা এখনো আসেনি। ওই ফাঁকটাতেই বেশিরভাগ চেষ্টা থেমে যায় — আর সেজন্যই প্রতিভার চেয়ে অধ্যবসায় বেশি জরুরি। যে মেধাবী শিক্ষার্থী বিষয়টা কঠিন হতেই থেমে যান, এক বছরেই তাঁকে ছাড়িয়ে যান লেগে থাকা সাধারণ একজন — প্রতিটি ক্লাসেই এর উদাহরণ আছে। অধ্যবসায় কিন্তু জেদ নয়। যিনি একই ব্যর্থ পদ্ধতি একশোবার করেন, তিনি অধ্যবসায় করছেন না — শিখতে অস্বীকার করছেন। প্রকৃত অধ্যবসায় পদ্ধতি বদলায়, লক্ষ্য ধরে রাখে। এটি নির্ভর করে এমন কিছু জিনিসের উপর যেগুলোর প্রশংসা কেউ করে না: উৎসাহ ছাড়াই চলে এমন রুটিন, মাঝেমধ্যের ঝোঁকের বদলে প্রতিদিনের ছোট কাজ, আর কিছুদিন অন্যের সামনে খারাপ করার সাহস।

এই বিষয়ে প্রায় সব উত্তরে থাকে রবার্ট ব্রুস ও মাকড়সার গল্প। পরীক্ষক সেটা হাজারবার পড়েছেন — এড়িয়ে যান। আলাদা হওয়ার তিনটি উপায়: (১) **সংজ্ঞাটা ধারালো করুন** — অধ্যবসায় হলো উৎসাহ ফুরানোর পরও লেগে থাকা; (২) **অধ্যবসায় ও জেদের পার্থক্য টানুন** — একই ব্যর্থ পদ্ধতির পুনরাবৃত্তি অধ্যবসায় নয়; এই পার্থক্যটা প্রায় কেউ লেখে না আর এটাই সবচেয়ে পরিণত অংশ; (৩) **নিজের চারপাশের উদাহরণ দিন** — উচ্চারণ নিয়ে হাসাহাসির পরও পরদিন আবার ইংরেজি বলা ছেলেটি। শেষ বাক্য: **যাঁরা পান, তাঁরা সাধারণত ঘরের সবচেয়ে চালাক মানুষ নন — শেষ পর্যন্ত যাঁরা ছিলেন তাঁরাই।**
