Dignity of labour means that all honest work deserves respect, and that no job is low because of what it is. In our society we do not really believe this. A clerk is respected and a carpenter is not, although the carpenter may earn more and know more. Parents who would be proud of an unemployed graduate would be ashamed of a son who repaired motorcycles. We call a mason's work 'small work' while living in the house he built. Yet a city stops within two days if the sweepers stop. A country that despises manual work also produces graduates who will not take the jobs that exist, which is one reason so many educated young people are unemployed while factories advertise. Countries where labour is respected do not have this gap: a plumber there is a professional, and a student takes a summer job without anyone thinking less of him. Respect is shown in small things — knowing the name of the man who cleans your street, paying an agreed wage on time, offering a chair and water to someone who has worked in your house. Work is not honourable or dishonourable; only the way it is done is.

শ্রমের মর্যাদা মানে — সব সৎ কাজই সম্মানের যোগ্য, আর কোনো কাজ তার ধরনের কারণে ছোট নয়। আমাদের সমাজ আসলে এটা বিশ্বাস করে না। কেরানিকে সম্মান করা হয়, কাঠমিস্ত্রিকে করা হয় না — যদিও কাঠমিস্ত্রি হয়তো বেশি আয় করেন ও বেশি জানেন। যে বাবা-মা বেকার স্নাতক ছেলেকে নিয়ে গর্ব করতেন, মোটরসাইকেল সারানো ছেলেকে নিয়ে তাঁরাই লজ্জা পান। রাজমিস্ত্রির কাজকে আমরা 'ছোট কাজ' বলি, অথচ থাকি তাঁরই গড়া ঘরে। অথচ পরিচ্ছন্নতাকর্মীরা থেমে গেলে দুদিনেই শহর অচল হয়ে যায়। যে দেশ কায়িক শ্রমকে ঘৃণা করে, সেই দেশ এমন স্নাতকও তৈরি করে যাঁরা বিদ্যমান চাকরিগুলো নেবেন না — শিক্ষিত তরুণদের বেকারত্বের এটাও একটা কারণ।

গড় উত্তর কেবল বলে 'সব কাজই মহান'। শক্তিশালী উত্তর দেখায় **আমরা আসলে এটা মানি না**, আর দেখায় তার ফল কী। ক্রম: (১) সংজ্ঞা; (২) **আমাদের বাস্তবতা** — কেরানি বনাম কাঠমিস্ত্রি, বেকার স্নাতক বনাম মিস্ত্রি ছেলে; (৩) নির্ভরতার সত্য — পরিচ্ছন্নতাকর্মীরা থামলে শহর থামে; (৪) **অর্থনৈতিক ফল** — শ্রমকে ছোট ভাবা আর বেকারত্বের সম্পর্ক; এটা প্রায় কেউ লেখে না; (৫) অন্য দেশে কী আলাদা; (৬) **সম্মান দেখানোর নির্দিষ্ট উপায়** — নাম জানা, সময়মতো মজুরি, চেয়ার ও পানি। শেষ বাক্য: কাজ সম্মানের বা অসম্মানের নয়, কেবল করার ধরনটাই।
