Model Paragraph (197 words)
Last November our school arranged a day trip to Sonargaon, and it was the first historical place I had ever visited. We left at seven in the morning in a hired bus, forty of us with two teachers, and reached Narayanganj in about two hours. Sonargaon was the capital of this region under the sultans, and its name means golden village. We first went to Panam City, a street of abandoned houses built by wealthy Hindu cloth merchants more than a century ago. The buildings stand on both sides with carved pillars, coloured glass and iron balconies, and most of them are empty and cracked, with young trees growing out of the walls. Our history teacher explained why they were left, and it was easier to believe standing there than it had been in class. Afterwards we saw the Folk Art Museum in the old Sardar Bari, with its jamdani weaving, terracotta, masks, boats and musical instruments. We ate our packed lunch under a tree and were back in Dhaka by evening. What stayed with me was that a place I had read one paragraph about in a textbook was a real street I could walk down.

- Which place should I choose?
- One you can describe with a few real facts — Sonargaon, Lalbagh Fort, Ahsan Manzil, Paharpur, the Sixty Dome Mosque or Mahasthangarh. Two or three accurate details beat a long list.
- How much history should I include?
- Two or three sentences woven into the visit. It is a narrative, not an essay, so let the teacher or a signboard deliver the history.
- How should it end?
- With the difference between reading about a place and standing in it. That contrast is the point of a school trip and it makes a natural closing.
