Cox's Bazar is a district town on the south-eastern coast of Bangladesh and the country's best known tourist place. Its beach runs about a hundred and twenty kilometres in an unbroken line, which is said to be the longest natural sea beach in the world. The town is named after Captain Hiram Cox, an English officer who settled refugees in the area in the eighteenth century. Visitors come for the sea itself — for the sunset, which turns the whole water red, and for the walk along Laboni, Sugandha and Inani, where the sand meets rocks. Nearby are Himchhari with its waterfall, the Buddhist temples of Ramu, and boats to Saint Martin's, our only coral island. Thousands of families earn from the visitors: hotels, restaurants, photographers, beach chairs, burmese markets and dried-fish shops. Tourism has also cost the place something. Hotels have been built almost on the sand, plastic is left everywhere after a holiday weekend, hills have been cut for construction and the rates charged in peak season are often unfair. A beach that took nature this long to make deserves better care than a single weekend's rubbish.
