Model Paragraph (200 words)
The Sundarbans is the largest mangrove forest in the world, spread over the southern districts of Khulna, Bagerhat and Satkhira and continuing into India. It takes its name from the sundari tree, which grows there in great numbers. It is not an ordinary forest. Salt water from the sea meets fresh water from the rivers here, and the trees survive by pushing breathing roots up through the mud, so at low tide the ground looks covered with thousands of small spikes. It is the home of the Royal Bengal tiger, and also of spotted deer, crocodiles, monkeys, wild boar, dolphins and hundreds of kinds of bird. UNESCO has declared it a World Heritage Site. Thousands of people live from it, collecting honey, catching fish and crab and cutting golpata for roofs. Its greatest service is one we notice only afterwards: it stands between the Bay of Bengal and our southern districts, and it has absorbed the first force of every major cyclone to reach this coast. Yet it is shrinking. Illegal logging, poaching, shrimp farms cut into its edge, oil spills in its rivers and rising salinity are all taking pieces of it, and nothing else can do its work.

- Why is it called the Sundarbans?
- After the sundari tree that grows there in large numbers. Some also link it to 'sundar' meaning beautiful, but the tree is the accepted origin.
- Should I mention cyclones?
- Yes, and give it real space. It is the strongest argument for protecting the forest and the detail that separates a good answer from a description of wildlife.
- What threatens it?
- Illegal logging, poaching, shrimp farms eating its edge, oil spills in its rivers, and rising salinity as sea level rises. Naming several is better than 'people are destroying it'.
