A Picnic Paragraph

Last December our class arranged a picnic, and it is the best day of the school year I can remember. We collected three hundred taka from each student, formed committees for food, transport and games, and chose a garden beside a river about forty kilometres from our town. Two buses were hired. We started at seven in the morning, and the whole journey was spent singing, with one boy on a dhol and nobody in tune. We reached at about nine. The cooks began at once on khichuri, beef and eggs, and the smell reached us long before the food did. While it was being made we played football and cricket, some boys swam, and our teachers sat under a tree and pretended not to notice. Lunch was eaten sitting on mats spread in the shade, and everything tasted better than it would have at home. In the afternoon there was a tug of war and a prize-giving, and the sun was going down when we started back. Everybody was tired, sunburnt and hoarse. The buses were quiet on the way home, which is how you know a picnic went well.

গত ডিসেম্বরে আমাদের ক্লাস একটা বনভোজনের আয়োজন করেছিল, আর স্কুলবছরের সবচেয়ে ভালো দিন হিসেবে ওটাই মনে আছে। প্রত্যেক শিক্ষার্থীর কাছ থেকে তিনশো টাকা তোলা হলো, খাবার-পরিবহন-খেলার জন্য আলাদা কমিটি হলো, আর বেছে নেওয়া হলো শহর থেকে চল্লিশ কিলোমিটার দূরে নদীর পাশের একটা বাগান। দুটো বাস ভাড়া করা হলো। সকাল সাতটায় রওনা, আর গোটা পথ কাটল গান গেয়ে — এক ছেলের হাতে ঢোল, আর কারও সুর ঠিক নেই। পৌঁছালাম নয়টার দিকে। বাবুর্চিরা সাথে সাথেই খিচুড়ি, গরুর মাংস ও ডিম রাঁধতে বসলেন, আর খাবার আসার অনেক আগেই গন্ধ এসে পৌঁছাল। রান্না চলাকালে আমরা ফুটবল ও ক্রিকেট খেললাম, কয়েকজন সাঁতার কাটল, শিক্ষকরা গাছের নিচে বসে না দেখার ভান করলেন।

আখ্যান, তাই past tense আর সময়ের ক্রম। ক্রম: (১) কবে, কারা, কোথায়; (২) **প্রস্তুতি** — চাঁদা, কমিটি, বাস; এই অংশটা অনেকে বাদ দেয়, অথচ এখানেই বাস্তবতা; (৩) যাত্রা; (৪) পৌঁছানো ও রান্না; (৫) খেলা; (৬) খাওয়া; (৭) বিকেলের অনুষ্ঠান ও ফেরা। **ইন্দ্রিয়ের বিবরণ** দিন: রান্নার গন্ধ, বেসুরো গান, ছায়ায় পাতা মাদুর। শেষ বাক্যে একটা পর্যবেক্ষণ রাখুন — ফেরার পথে বাস নীরব ছিল, আর সেটাই প্রমাণ যে দিনটা ভালো গেছে। এতে আখ্যানটা 'খুব মজা হয়েছিল' না লিখেই শেষ হয়।
