A moonlit night is a night when the moon is full or nearly full and its light falls on everything without a lamp being needed. It is at its best in a village, and best of all in winter, when the sky is clear and the air is still. The whole landscape changes under that light. Tin roofs shine like water, the pond behind the house turns into a sheet of silver, the shadows of trees lie sharp and black on the ground, and a path one has walked a thousand times looks unfamiliar. Sound carries further at night: a dog barking two villages away, a boat engine on the river, insects in the paddy, and somebody's radio. Old people bring their mats out into the yard, children run about long past their bedtime, and stories are told that would not be told indoors. In a city one hardly notices such a night, because street lights and buildings take it away and the sky is never quite dark. That is a small loss, but a real one. A full moon is one of the few beautiful things in this country that still costs nothing and belongs to everybody.
