A winter morning in Bangladesh is cold, misty and quiet. Fog covers the fields so thickly that a man walking twenty yards away is only a shape, and the sun rises late and pale, giving light without warmth. Dew sits on the grass and on the leaves of the mustard plants, and the air smells of smoke from the fires people light at the roadside. Village life begins slowly. Old men and children gather round a fire of straw and dry leaves, stretching their hands to it and talking. Farmers wrapped in shawls go to the fields later than usual, and boatmen wait for the fog to lift before pushing off. Housewives make pitha of new rice and date molasses, and the smell of it fills the morning. In the towns the streets stay empty longer, buses move with their lights on, and schoolchildren wait shivering for a rickshaw. But a winter morning is not pleasant for everyone. The poor who have no warm clothes suffer badly, and every year the newspapers report deaths from cold in the northern districts. By ten o'clock the fog thins, the sun grows warm, and the day becomes one of the most comfortable of the year.
