The most memorable day of my life was the day our SSC results came out. I had slept badly and woke before six, and by eight the whole house was awake and pretending not to be nervous. The internet was slow all morning because half the country was refreshing the same page. My father kept saying that any result would be fine, which told me exactly how worried he was. At about eleven my cousin got through on his phone and read out my roll number and grade, and for a second I did not believe him and asked him to read it again. My mother did not say anything at all; she went into the kitchen and I heard her crying, and then she came out and started making payesh. Neighbours came through the afternoon, my father telephoned relatives he had not called in a year, and I was hugged by people whose names I did not know. What I remember most is not the grade. It is my mother in the kitchen, and the understanding that a result belongs to a whole family and not only to the student who sat the examination.
