A Book Fair Paragraph

A book fair is a gathering where publishers set up stalls and sell books directly to readers. The largest in our country is the Ekushey Book Fair, held through February on the Bangla Academy premises and the Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka, in memory of the language martyrs. Hundreds of stalls stand in rows, each with a publisher's name above it, and thousands of new titles appear during the month — novels, poetry, translations, children's books and academic work. The crowd is part of the experience. Students come in groups, families bring small children, writers sit signing copies, and the paths between stalls fill so completely in the evening that walking becomes slow. Smaller fairs are now held in district towns and in many schools, which matters more than it sounds, because a child who has never entered a bookshop may enter a fair. A book fair does more than sell books. It reminds a country that reading is a public pleasure rather than a private duty, and for one month a year it puts writers, publishers and readers in the same field.

বইমেলা হলো এমন এক সমাবেশ, যেখানে প্রকাশকরা স্টল দিয়ে সরাসরি পাঠকের কাছে বই বিক্রি করেন। আমাদের দেশের সবচেয়ে বড়টি একুশে বইমেলা — ফেব্রুয়ারি মাসজুড়ে বাংলা একাডেমি প্রাঙ্গণ ও সোহরাওয়ার্দী উদ্যানে, ভাষাশহীদদের স্মরণে। সারি সারি শত শত স্টল, প্রতিটির উপরে প্রকাশকের নাম, আর মাসজুড়ে হাজারো নতুন বই — উপন্যাস, কবিতা, অনুবাদ, শিশুতোষ ও গবেষণাগ্রন্থ। ভিড়টাও মেলার অংশ: শিক্ষার্থীরা দল বেঁধে আসে, পরিবার ছোট বাচ্চা নিয়ে আসে, লেখকরা বসে অটোগ্রাফ দেন, সন্ধ্যায় স্টলের মাঝের পথ এমন ভরে যায় যে হাঁটা ধীর হয়ে আসে। এখন জেলা শহরে ও স্কুলেও ছোট মেলা হয় — যা শোনার চেয়ে বেশি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ, কারণ যে শিশু কখনো বইয়ের দোকানে ঢোকেনি, সে মেলায় ঢুকতে পারে।
