International Mother Language Day is observed on the twenty-first of February in memory of those who died for the right to speak their own language. In 1952, when the rulers of Pakistan tried to make Urdu the only state language, students of Dhaka University came out in protest. Police fired on them, and Salam, Barkat, Rafiq, Jabbar and others were killed on the street. Their sacrifice saved Bangla, and it began the movement that led to independence nineteen years later. In 1999 UNESCO declared the day an international one, so what began as our own grief is now observed in many countries as a day for every threatened language. In Bangladesh the day starts before dawn. People walk barefoot to the Shaheed Minar singing 'Amar bhaier rokte rangano', and place flowers there in silence. The national flag flies at half-mast, schools and offices remain closed, and a month-long book fair reaches its busiest day. Newspapers publish special issues and television broadcasts programmes on the Language Movement. The day asks something of us as well: a language is not honoured only by flowers once a year, but by using it well, teaching it properly and refusing to treat our own tongue as inferior.

International Mother Language Day is celebrated on 21st February.
International Mother Language Day is observed on 21 February.
A day commemorating deaths is 'observed', not 'celebrated'. The distinction matters here.
In 1952 we got our independence through the language movement.
The Language Movement of 1952 began the process that led to independence in 1971.
Independence came in 1971. Compressing nineteen years into one sentence is a factual error.
UNESCO declared 21st February as International Mother Language Day in 1952.
UNESCO declared it International Mother Language Day in 1999.
Two dates, two events. Mixing them is the most common error on this topic after the 'celebrated' slip.
We should respect our mother language and other languages also.
A language is honoured by using it well, not by flowers once a year.
The first is a slogan. The second is a thought, and examiners notice the difference.
- Is this the same topic as 'Ekushey February' or 'Shaheed Dibash'?
- The same day, but the emphasis shifts. 'Shaheed Dibash' expects more on 1952 and the martyrs; 'International Mother Language Day' expects the UNESCO recognition and the global meaning as well.
- Which names should I mention?
- Salam, Barkat, Rafiq and Jabbar are the names always cited. Getting them right shows you know the history rather than the outline.
- Should I mention the Ekushey Book Fair?
- Yes, one sentence. It is a genuine part of how the month is observed and connects the day to reading and to Bangla itself.
- Can I quote the song?
- One line — 'Amar bhaier rokte rangano' — is enough and is instantly recognised. A longer quotation eats words you need elsewhere.
