My mother is the person who has shaped my life more than anyone else. She is about forty-five, of medium height, and wears a cotton sari with her hair tied back. She rises before the rest of us, prays, and has breakfast ready by the time we come to the table. Her day has no fixed end: cooking, washing, sending us to school, helping my younger sister with her lessons, looking after my grandmother, and sitting up when one of us has fever. She studied only up to class ten because she was married early, and that is exactly why she insists that her daughters will not be. What I have learnt from her was never taught in words. She gives food to a beggar without being asked and never mentions it afterwards. She apologises when she is wrong, even to her own children, which few adults do. She has never once told me to be first in class, only to be honest and to finish what I begin. I do not think I will ever repay her, and I have understood that she is not keeping count.
