A journey by boat is the oldest way of travelling in this country of rivers, and in my opinion still the pleasantest. Last rainy season my uncle took our family from his village in Barishal to a relative's house across the river. We hired a country boat with a small engine at about nine in the morning. The river was full, the water almost level with the fields, and the boat moved slowly against the current with a steady sound from the engine. What I remember is the openness. There was water on both sides, and villages appeared behind lines of coconut and betel-nut trees, each with a mosque roof showing above them. Fishermen were casting nets from small boats, a cargo boat loaded with jute passed us going the other way, and children swimming near a bank shouted at us. My aunt had brought muri and pitha, and we ate sitting on the deck with our feet hanging over the side. The boatman told us the names of the villages we passed. We reached at about two in the afternoon. No bus journey has ever felt so unhurried.
