Waiting to hear your own name in the announcement.
Waiting for your destination and your flight or train number.
Announcements are addressed to a flight, not to a person. A name is used only in a last call for someone who has not boarded — by which time you have already missed everything else that concerned you.
Hearing "gate four" and walking to gate fourteen.
Confirming the number on the departure screen before you walk.
The -teen and -ty family are hard enough in a quiet room; over a loudspeaker with an echo they are worse. The screen carries the same information in writing, so use both.
Giving up after missing the first announcement.
Staying still and listening for the repeat.
Public announcements are almost always repeated, often in a second language too. The second time you already know the subject, so your ear has far less work to do.
Leaving the departure area for a long meal after hearing "delayed".
Staying where the announcements are audible.
A delay is an estimate, and updates are announced in the departure area, not sent to you. Boarding can start before the time you were first told.

Why are airport announcements so hard to understand?

Will an announcement say my name?
Normally no. Announcements are addressed to a flight or a train and its destination. A passenger's name is used only in a last call for someone who has not boarded, so waiting for your name means missing every announcement about your flight.
