Understanding Numbers and Dates When Listening
শোনার সময় সংখ্যা ও তারিখ বোঝা
Introductionভূমিকা
Numbers are the part of listening where one missed sound costs you money, a seat or a mark. Thirteen and thirty differ by a single ending; a price, a phone number and a date each have their own rhythm. Learn those few patterns and numbers stop being the place where you freeze.
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
Hearing numbers is a listening skill of its own: -teen and -ty endings, the way years and dates are read aloud, how prices and phone numbers are grouped, and how the Bangladeshi lakh–crore system maps onto thousand, million and billion in international English.
সংখ্যা শোনা আলাদা একটি দক্ষতা: -teen ও -ty শেষাংশ, সাল ও তারিখ পড়ার ধরন, দাম ও ফোন নম্বরের ভাগ, আর আমাদের লাখ-কোটি হিসাব আন্তর্জাতিক ইংরেজির thousand, million ও billion-এর সাথে কীভাবে মেলে।
Bangla Explanation
সন্দেহ হলে জিজ্ঞাসা করার একটাই সঠিক উপায় আছে — 'One three, or three zero?' তবে ২০০০ সালের পরের কিছু সাল দুইভাবেই শোনা যায় — 2005 = 'two thousand and five', আর 2026 = 'twenty twenty-six' বা 'two thousand and twenty-six'। তারিখের ক্ষেত্রে ব্রিটিশ ধরন 'the fifth of March' বা 'March the fifth', আমেরিকান ধরন 'March fifth'।
Examplesউদাহরণ
- "Thirteen" ends in a clear n sound; "thirty" ends in an ee sound — that ending is the safest clue."Thirteen" শেষ হয় স্পষ্ট ন ধ্বনিতে; "thirty" শেষ হয় ই-জাতীয় ধ্বনিতে — এই শেষটাই সবচেয়ে নিরাপদ সূত্র।
- "The fare is one hundred and twenty taka." — British speakers keep the "and"; many Americans drop it."The fare is one hundred and twenty taka." — ব্রিটিশরা "and" রাখেন; অনেক আমেরিকান বাদ দেন।
- "He was born in nineteen seventy-one." — years are read in two halves."He was born in nineteen seventy-one." — সাল পড়া হয় দুই ভাগে।
- "My number is oh one seven, double three, five nine..." — oh means zero, double three means 33."My number is oh one seven, double three, five nine..." — oh মানে শূন্য, double three মানে ৩৩।
- "The meeting is on the fifth of March" (British) = "The meeting is on March fifth" (American)."The meeting is on the fifth of March" (ব্রিটিশ) = "The meeting is on March fifth" (আমেরিকান)।
- "Come at quarter to seven." — that is 6:45, not 7:15."Come at quarter to seven." — এটি ৬:৪৫, ৭:১৫ নয়।
- "The project cost five hundred thousand taka." — that is five lakh."The project cost five hundred thousand taka." — এটি পাঁচ লাখ।
Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
Deciding between fifteen and fifty by stress alone.
Listening to the ending — n for -teen, an ee vowel for -ty.
Before a noun the stress on a -teen number often moves to the front, so stress is not dependable there. Bangla gives পনেরো and পঞ্চাশ two completely different words, so a Bengali ear has never had to separate a pair that differs only in its ending.
Converting lakh and crore in your head while the speaker continues.
Writing the digits you heard first, converting afterwards.
International English groups numbers in thousands and millions, so the conversion is real work — and it happens exactly when the next sentence is being said.
Reading "7/8" in an English email as 8 July.
Checking whether the writer uses day-month or month-day order.
Bangladesh writes day first, and so does British usage, but American usage puts the month first. When a date is spoken, the month name removes the ambiguity — so listen for the name, not the figure.
Hearing "double two" and writing a single 2.
Writing 22.
Saying double before a repeated digit is common in phone and reference numbers, and it has no equivalent in the way we read numbers aloud in Bangla.
Tipsটিপস
- Write numbers as digits the moment you hear them, never as words. — সংখ্যা শোনামাত্র অঙ্কে লিখুন, কখনো কথায় নয়।
- To check a number politely, say the digits: 'One five, or five zero?' — সংখ্যা নিশ্চিত করতে অঙ্ক ধরে বলুন: 'One five, or five zero?'
- Practise with real audio that is full of numbers — prices, timetables and weather reports. — সংখ্যায় ভরা অডিও দিয়ে অনুশীলন করুন — দাম, সময়সূচি আর আবহাওয়ার খবর।
- Learn the money bridge once: one lakh is a hundred thousand, one crore is ten million. — টাকার সেতুটা একবারেই শিখে নিন: এক লাখ মানে one hundred thousand, এক কোটি মানে ten million।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা
How can I tell thirteen from thirty when someone speaks fast?
Listen to how the word ends. A -teen number finishes with an n you can hear; a -ty number finishes with an ee vowel. Stress helps when the number stands alone, but before a noun the stress on -teen often shifts forward, so the ending is the more reliable clue.
How are years said in English?
Most are read in two halves: 1971 is 'nineteen seventy-one' and 1998 is 'nineteen ninety-eight'. Years just after 2000 are commonly said as 'two thousand and five', while later ones are heard both ways — 2026 as 'twenty twenty-six' or as 'two thousand and twenty-six'.
Why do numbers in English feel harder than words?
Because a number carries no context to rescue you. If you miss an adjective, the sentence still makes sense; if you miss a digit, the whole fact is wrong. That is why writing digits down immediately matters more with numbers than with anything else you hear.
How do I handle lakh and crore in English conversation?
Lakh and crore are normal in Bangladeshi and Indian English, but a foreign listener may not know them. Say the international form — five hundred thousand, ten million — when you are speaking to someone outside the region, and expect that form back when you are listening.
What is the safest way to confirm a number I did not catch?
Repeat it digit by digit rather than as a whole number: 'One five, or five zero?' It sounds businesslike, it is what airline and bank staff do themselves, and it removes the exact confusion that -teen and -ty create.
