Letter to a Friend Describing a Book Fair Letter

Uttara, Dhaka 9 August 2026 My dear Tanzim, How are you? I hope everybody at home is well. You asked me in your last letter what the Ekushey Book Fair is like, and since you have never been to Dhaka in February, I shall try to describe it. I went on a Friday afternoon with my elder brother. The fair covers the Bangla Academy premises and spreads across the Suhrawardy Udyan, and it is far larger than I had imagined. Hundreds of stalls stand in long rows with the publishers' names painted above them, and every year the small publishers get their own corner, which I liked. The crowd is half the experience. By five o'clock the paths between the stalls were so full that we moved at the speed of the people ahead of us. Whole families come with small children, students come in groups, and at one stall a writer sat signing copies with a queue in front of him. I bought four books — two novels, a collection of poems and a book about the Liberation War — and my brother bought more than he had planned, which is what everyone says afterwards. We ate at the food stalls and came home tired at nine. What struck me most was the number of people who had come simply because it was the book fair, not because they needed a particular book. এটি বন্ধুকে লেখা ব্যক্তিগত চিঠি, যেখানে একুশে বইমেলার বর্ণনা দেওয়া হয়েছে। উপরে ঠিকানা ও তারিখ, তারপর 'My dear Tanzim,'। প্রথম অনুচ্ছেদে কুশল ও চিঠি লেখার কারণ — গত চিঠিতে বন্ধু জানতে চেয়েছিল বইমেলা কেমন। দ্বিতীয় অনুচ্ছেদে মেলার বিস্তার: বাংলা একাডেমি প্রাঙ্গণ ও সোহরাওয়ার্দী উদ্যান জুড়ে, সারি সারি শত শত স্টল, উপরে প্রকাশকের নাম, ছোট প্রকাশকদের নিজস্ব কোণ। তৃতীয় অনুচ্ছেদে ভিড় — পাঁচটার মধ্যে স্টলের মাঝের পথ এতটাই ভরে যায় যে সামনের মানুষের গতিতেই হাঁটতে হয়; পরিবার, দল বেঁধে শিক্ষার্থী, আর এক স্টলে সারি নিয়ে অটোগ্রাফ দিতে বসা লেখক। চতুর্থ অনুচ্ছেদে কী কেনা হলো। পঞ্চম অনুচ্ছেদে সবচেয়ে ভালো অংশ — যা মনে দাগ কেটেছে: বহু মানুষ এসেছেন কেবল বইমেলা বলেই, কোনো নির্দিষ্ট বইয়ের দরকারে নয়।

বর্ণনামূলক চিঠিতে দুটো জিনিস মেলাতে হয়: **চিঠির বিন্যাস** আর **বর্ণনার মান**। বিন্যাস: ঠিকানা ও তারিখ → **My dear …,** → কুশল ও লেখার কারণ → বর্ণনা → পাল্টা কথা → **Yours ever**। **Subject লাইন নেই**। বর্ণনায় ক্রম রাখুন: (১) কবে ও কার সাথে গিয়েছিলেন; (২) **জায়গা ও আকার**; (৩) **ভিড় ও মানুষ**; (৪) কী কিনলেন; (৫) **যা সবচেয়ে মনে ধরেছে**। পঞ্চম অংশটাই চিঠিটাকে ভ্রমণবিবরণী থেকে ব্যক্তিগত চিঠিতে তোলে — একটা পর্যবেক্ষণ দিন, তালিকা নয়। শেষে বন্ধুকে আমন্ত্রণ জানানো আর পরিবারের খোঁজ নেওয়া বাদ দেবেন না; এগুলোই চিঠিকে চিঠি করে।
