Introductionভূমিকা
IELTS Writing asks for at least 150 words in Task 1 and at least 250 words in Task 2, and you have 60 minutes for both together. Those are minimums, not targets: writing fewer words is penalised under Task Achievement or Task Response, while there is no published maximum — the clock is what limits the top end.

The word count is part of the task instruction, printed above each question. Task 1 says 'Write at least 150 words' and Task 2 says 'Write at least 250 words'. An answer below the minimum is treated as not fully meeting the task, and language copied from the question is not credited as your own writing.

সংখ্যা দুটি মনে রাখা সহজ — Task 1: ১৫০, Task 2: ২৫০। কিন্তু কাজে লাগানোর জন্য আরও তিনটি জিনিস জানা দরকার। এক, ঠিক ২৫০ লিখে থেমে যাওয়া বিপজ্জনক। পরীক্ষার হলে গুনতে গিয়ে দুই-চার শব্দ এদিক-ওদিক হয়, আর সীমার নিচে নামলেই Task Response-এ নম্বর কাটা যায়। তাই Task 2-এ ২৬০–২৯০ আর Task 1-এ ১৬০–১৯০ লক্ষ্য রাখুন — নিরাপদ, অথচ সময়ও নষ্ট হয় না। দুই, কম লিখলে ঠিক কত নম্বর কাটা যাবে তার কোনো প্রকাশিত তালিকা নেই। কেউ যদি বলে “প্রতি ২০ শব্দে এক ব্যান্ড কাটে”, সেটি তার নিজের বানানো হিসাব — IELTS এমন কোনো ছক প্রকাশ করেনি। যা জানা আছে তা হলো, উত্তর ছোট হলে Task Achievement বা Task Response-এর বর্ণনায় সেটি ধরা পড়ে, কারণ কম জায়গায় আইডিয়া গড়ে তোলা যায় না। তিন, বেশি লেখারও দাম আছে, তবে সেটা নম্বর কাটা নয় — সময়। ৩৫০ শব্দ লিখলে ভুলের সংখ্যাও বাড়ে, আর শেষে যাচাই করার সময় থাকে না; Grammatical Range and Accuracy-তে সেই ভুলগুলোই ধরা পড়ে। এবার গোনার কৌশল, যেটা কাগজে পরীক্ষা দিলে সবচেয়ে দরকারি। পরীক্ষার হলে এক এক করে শব্দ গোনার সময় নেই। বাসায় অনুশীলনের সময় নিজের হাতের লেখায় দেখে নিন এক লাইনে গড়ে কত শব্দ ধরে — ধরুন ৯টি। তাহলে ২৮০ শব্দ মানে আপনার হাতের লেখায় প্রায় ৩১ লাইন। এই একটি সংখ্যা মুখস্থ থাকলে পরীক্ষার হলে শুধু লাইন গুনলেই চলে। কম্পিউটারে পরীক্ষা দিলে পর্দাতেই শব্দসংখ্যা দেখানো হয়, তাই এই হিসাব লাগে না। আর সময় ভাগ: Task 1-এ ২০ মিনিট, Task 2-এ ৪০ মিনিট। কারণ চূড়ান্ত Writing ব্যান্ডে Task 2-এর ওজন Task 1-এর দ্বিগুণ — Task 1-এ বাড়তি দশ মিনিট খরচ করে Task 2 অসম্পূর্ণ রাখা সবচেয়ে ব্যয়বহুল ভুল।

Copying the question sentence into the introduction to reach 250 words.
Paraphrase the question in your own words.
Language lifted from the prompt is not credited as your own writing, so a copied introduction leaves the essay shorter than it looks and shows nothing for Lexical Resource.
Opening with a long general ভূমিকা about science, technology and modern civilisation.
Open by restating the specific question and stating your position.
Bangla essay writing teaches a wide introduction before the topic arrives. IELTS marks how the question was answered, so a general opening spends 30 or 40 words that cannot earn anything.
Writing 250 words exactly and stopping.
Write 260–290 words.
Hand counting in an exam hall is never precise, and falling even slightly below the minimum is penalised. A small margin costs a minute and removes the risk.
Spending 30 minutes on Task 1 because the chart is interesting.
Leave Task 1 at 20 minutes even if it feels unfinished.
Task 2 counts twice as much as Task 1 in the Writing band, so ten minutes moved from Task 2 to Task 1 costs roughly twice what it gains.
Writing 400 words to look impressive.
Write enough to develop your ideas, then check your work.
There is no penalty for length itself, but more sentences means more errors and no time left to find them — and accuracy is a scored criterion.

How many marks do I lose if I write under 250 words?
IELTS does not publish a fixed deduction for being under length. What is documented is that an under-length answer is penalised under Task Achievement or Task Response, because ideas cannot be developed in too little space. Treat 250 as a floor you never approach from below.
Do contractions and numbers count as words?
Contractions such as 'don't' are read as one word, and a figure such as '2022' counts as a word too. The safer point is that formal essay writing normally avoids contractions anyway, so this rarely changes your count by much.
Is a longer essay a better essay?
No. Beyond the minimum, the criteria reward developed ideas, accurate grammar and precise vocabulary — none of which is measured by length. An accurate 280-word essay usually scores better than a rushed 380-word one.
Which task should I write first?
Either, as long as Task 2 gets its 40 minutes. Many candidates start with Task 2 because it is worth twice as much and needs a clear head; others prefer Task 1 as a warm-up. Decide before test day and keep to it.
