Introductionভূমিকা

One wrong assumption costs Bangladeshi candidates more marks than any grammar rule: that Reading, like Listening, gives you ten minutes at the end to copy your answers across. It does not. Sixty minutes, forty questions, and every answer must already be on the answer sheet when the invigilator says stop. Candidates who learn this in the exam hall lose five to eight marks in the last two minutes — marks they had already earned.

ব্যাকরণের যেকোনো নিয়মের চেয়ে বেশি নম্বর কেড়ে নেয় একটাই ভুল ধারণা: Reading-এও নাকি Listening-এর মতো শেষে দশ মিনিট পাওয়া যায় উত্তর তুলে লেখার জন্য। পাওয়া যায় না। ষাট মিনিট, চল্লিশটা প্রশ্ন, আর “থামুন” বলার মুহূর্তে প্রতিটি উত্তর উত্তরপত্রে লেখা থাকতেই হবে। যাঁরা এই কথাটা পরীক্ষার হলে গিয়ে জানতে পারেন, তাঁরা শেষ দুই মিনিটে পাঁচ থেকে আটটা নম্বর হারান — যে নম্বরগুলো তাঁরা ইতিমধ্যেই জিতে ফেলেছিলেন।

Time management here means deciding the minutes before you start and obeying them regardless of how a question is going: about 20 minutes per Reading passage, 20 for Writing Task 1 and 40 for Task 2. The discipline that matters is not going fast — it is leaving a question that is not working and coming back.

**পত্র ধরে ধরে ঘড়ি।** *Listening:* প্রায় ৩০ মিনিট রেকর্ডিং; কাগজে পরীক্ষা দিলে শেষে **১০ মিনিট** উত্তর তোলার জন্য, কম্পিউটারে মাত্র **২ মিনিট** মিলিয়ে দেখার জন্য। *Reading:* ৬০ মিনিট, ৪০ প্রশ্ন, **বাড়তি সময় নেই** — তিন passage-এ ২০ / ২০ / ২০, বা তৃতীয়টা কঠিন বলে ১৭ / ২০ / ২৩। *Writing:* ৬০ মিনিট — Task 1-এ ২০, Task 2-এ ৪০। *Speaking:* ১১–১৪ মিনিট, সময় পরীক্ষকই সামলান। **Writing-এ সবচেয়ে দামি ভুলটা: Task 1-এ বেশি সময় দেওয়া।** Task 1 নিরাপদ মনে হয় — সংখ্যা আছে, নিজের মত দিতে হয় না — তাই অনেকে ৩০ মিনিট দিয়ে ফেলেন, আর Task 2 অসম্পূর্ণ রেখে আসেন। কিন্তু চূড়ান্ত Writing ব্যান্ডে **Task 2-এর ওজন Task 1-এর দ্বিগুণ**। ২০ মিনিটে ঘড়ি বাজলে Task 1 যেখানে আছে সেখানেই থামুন। আর ৪০ মিনিটের ভাগটা এভাবে: **৫ মিনিট পরিকল্পনা, ৩০ মিনিট লেখা, ৫ মিনিট যাচাই**। ওই শেষ ৫ মিনিটে নতুন বাক্য লিখবেন না — শুধু চারটে জিনিস খুঁজুন: article, বহুবচনের s, preposition, আর verb-এর মিল। **আর একটা অভ্যাস, যেটা বোর্ড পরীক্ষা থেকে আসে:** বেশি লিখলে বেশি নম্বর। IELTS-এ নয়। ৪০০ শব্দের Task 2 মানে বেশি ভুল, আর যাচাইয়ের সময় শূন্য — Grammatical Range and Accuracy-তে সেই ভুলগুলোই ধরা পড়ে। Task 2-এ ২৬০–২৯০ শব্দই যথেষ্ট, Task 1-এ ১৬০–১৯০। **Reading-এ সময় বাঁচানোর তিনটে বাস্তব কৌশল।** এক, **অনুবাদ বন্ধ করুন** — মাথার ভেতরে বাংলা করে পড়লে গতি প্রায় তিন গুণ কমে; অনুশীলনের সময় নিজেকে নিয়ম দিন, অচেনা শব্দে থামব না। দুই, **উত্তর সাথে সাথেই উত্তরপত্রে লিখুন**, প্রশ্নপত্রে দাগিয়ে রেখে পরে তুলব — এই ভাবনাটাই বিপদ। তিন, **প্রশ্নের ধরন অনুযায়ী ক্রম বদলান** — যেগুলো passage-এর ক্রমে আসে (True/False/Not Given, sentence ও summary completion) সেগুলো আগে, আর যেগুলো ক্রম মানে না (matching headings, matching features) সেগুলো পরে; ততক্ষণে passage-টা চেনা হয়ে যায়। **সব পত্রে একটাই নিয়ম: আটকে থাকবেন না।** একটা প্রশ্নে যা সময় বরাদ্দ, তার দ্বিগুণ পার হলে দাগ দিয়ে এগিয়ে যান। ভুল উত্তরে নম্বর কাটা যায় না, তাই ফাঁকা ঘর মানে নিশ্চিত শূন্য আর অনুমান মানে সম্ভাবনা। আর সবচেয়ে জরুরি প্রস্তুতিটা বাসায়: **প্রতিটি অনুশীলন ঘড়ি ধরে করুন।** সময় ছাড়া অনুশীলন করলে আপনি বিষয়টা শিখছেন, পরীক্ষাটা নয় — আর মাসে অন্তত একবার চারটে পত্র একদিনে, একটানা দিন, কারণ পরীক্ষার দিন ক্লান্তিও একটা প্রতিপক্ষ।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

  • Spending 30 minutes on Reading Passage 1 because it feels easy.

    Capping each passage at about 20 minutes.

    The three passages get harder, so overspending early leaves too little time for the tougher questions that carry the same marks.

  • Writing Task 1 first for 35 minutes and rushing Task 2.

    Giving Task 2 the full 40 minutes it deserves.

    Task 2 is worth twice the marks of Task 1, so it must get the larger share of time.

  • Getting stuck on one hard Reading question for several minutes.

    Marking it, moving on, and returning at the end.

    Every question is worth one mark, so it is never worth sacrificing several easy marks to chase one hard one.

  • Practising at home without a timer.

    Always practising full sections against the clock.

    Exam pace only becomes automatic if you rehearse under real time pressure.

How much time do I get for each part of the IELTS test?

Listening is about 30 minutes, Reading is 60 minutes, Writing is 60 minutes and Speaking is 11 to 14 minutes. On the paper test you also get 10 extra minutes to transfer Listening answers, but the computer test has no transfer time.

Why do so many people run out of time in IELTS Reading?

Because they read every passage word for word. The fix is to scan and skim: read the questions first, then locate the relevant part of the text. Capping each passage at about 20 minutes also stops one section from eating the whole hour.

Should I write Task 1 or Task 2 first in the Writing test?

Either works, but many candidates do Task 2 first because it carries more marks and needs a fresh mind. Whichever you choose, protect the 40-minute budget for Task 2 and do not let Task 1 overrun.
