Most candidates lose marks not because their English is weak, but because they make the same avoidable mistakes: writing under the word count, answering the wrong question, misspelling what they hear, or memorising answers. Knowing these traps in advance is worth half a band or more on test day.

A 'band killer' is a repeated, avoidable error that pulls down one of the four scoring criteria — for example, an off-topic Task 2 essay hurts Task Response, and a misspelled Listening answer is simply marked wrong.
'Band killer' হলো এমন একটি বারবার হওয়া, এড়ানো-যায় এমন ভুল যা চারটি scoring criteria-র একটিকে নিচে টেনে নামায় — যেমন, বিষয়-বহির্ভূত Task 2 essay Task Response কমায়, আর Listening-এ ভুল বানানের উত্তর সরাসরি ভুল ধরা হয়।

সবচেয়ে বেশি হওয়া ভুলগুলো: (১) Writing-এ শব্দসংখ্যার কম লেখা — Task 1-এ কমপক্ষে ১৫০ ও Task 2-এ কমপক্ষে ২৫০ শব্দ না লিখলে penalty হয়। (২) প্রশ্ন ভালো করে না পড়ে উত্তর দেওয়া — 'discuss both views' চাইলে দুই দিকই লিখতে হবে। (৩) Listening ও Reading-এ বানান ও grammar ভুল — সঠিক উত্তরও ভুল বানানে লিখলে শূন্য। (৪) Speaking-এ মুখস্থ উত্তর বলা — examiner সহজে বুঝে ফেলে এবং নম্বর কমায়। (৫) খুব বড় বা কঠিন শব্দ ভুলভাবে ব্যবহার করা। (৬) সময় ব্যবস্থাপনার অভাব। প্রতিটি section-এর নির্দেশনা মন দিয়ে পড়ুন এবং অনুশীলনের সময় নিজের সাধারণ ভুলগুলোর একটি তালিকা রাখুন।

- Task 2 asks you to 'discuss both views and give your opinion' — so cover both sides, then your view.Task 2 আপনাকে 'দুই দিকই আলোচনা করে মত দিতে' বলে — তাই দুই দিক লিখে তারপর নিজের মত দিন।
- In Listening, write '15th March', not 'fifteen march' — spelling and form must be exact.Listening-এ 'fifteen march' নয়, '15th March' লিখুন — বানান ও রূপ ঠিক হতে হবে।
- Say 'I think the main reason is...' instead of reciting a memorised paragraph.মুখস্থ প্যারা না বলে বলুন 'I think the main reason is...'।
- Write 'many people believe', not 'peoples believes' — 'people' is already plural.'peoples believes' নয়, লিখুন 'many people believe' — 'people' এমনিতেই বহুবচন।
- If you don't know a word in Speaking, paraphrase: 'a place where you keep money' for 'bank'.Speaking-এ শব্দ না জানলে ঘুরিয়ে বলুন: 'bank'-এর বদলে 'a place where you keep money'।
- Answer the exact question: if asked 'why', give reasons, not just a description.ঠিক প্রশ্নের উত্তর দিন: 'why' জিজ্ঞেস করলে বর্ণনা নয়, কারণ দিন।

Writing a 180-word Task 2 essay to save time.
Writing at least 250 words for Task 2 (and 150 for Task 1).
You are penalised for being under the word limit, so a short essay caps your score no matter how good the English is.
Memorising a full Speaking answer and reciting it.
Learning useful phrases and ideas, then speaking naturally.
Examiners are trained to spot memorised answers and will lower your Fluency and Coherence score.
Writing 'the goverment' or 'enviroment' in Writing and Listening.
Spelling 'government' and 'environment' correctly.
A correct answer with a spelling error is marked wrong in Listening and Reading, and hurts Lexical Resource in Writing.
Copying whole phrases from the question into your essay.
Paraphrasing the question in your own words.
Words copied directly from the prompt are not counted, and heavy copying looks like a weak Lexical Resource.

- Aim for accuracy over big words — a correct simple sentence beats a wrong complex one. — কঠিন শব্দের চেয়ে সঠিকতাকে গুরুত্ব দিন — একটি ভুল জটিল বাক্যের চেয়ে একটি সঠিক সহজ বাক্য ভালো।
- Leave two minutes at the end of Writing to check spelling, articles and verb endings. — Writing-এর শেষে দুই মিনিট রাখুন — বানান, article ও verb-এর শেষ অংশ যাচাই করতে।

What is the single most common IELTS Writing mistake?
Not answering the exact question. Many candidates write a general essay about the topic instead of responding to the specific task, which limits the Task Response score to Band 5 or 6 no matter how good the language is. Always underline the task words first.
Do small grammar and spelling mistakes really matter?
Yes. In Listening and Reading a misspelled answer is simply wrong. In Writing and Speaking, frequent errors reduce the Grammatical Range and Accuracy score, so leaving time to proofread is worth real marks.
Is it a mistake to memorise answers for IELTS Speaking?
It usually backfires. Examiners are trained to recognise memorised, unnatural answers and will lower your Fluency and Coherence band. It is far safer to learn flexible phrases and practise speaking about a wide range of topics.
