Linking words (also called cohesive devices or connectors) are the words that join your ideas so an examiner can follow your argument smoothly. In IELTS Writing, Coherence and Cohesion is a full quarter of your score, so using linkers accurately — not just often — is one of the fastest ways to move from Band 6 to Band 7.
Linking words (cohesive devices বা connectors নামেও পরিচিত) হলো সেই শব্দ যা আপনার ভাবনাগুলোকে জোড়া দেয়, যাতে examiner সহজে আপনার যুক্তি বুঝতে পারেন। IELTS Writing-এ Coherence and Cohesion মোট নম্বরের এক-চতুর্থাংশ, তাই linker সঠিকভাবে ব্যবহার করা — শুধু বেশি নয় — Band 6 থেকে Band 7-এ যাওয়ার দ্রুততম উপায়গুলোর একটি।

A linking word signals the relationship between two ideas — adding, contrasting, giving a reason, showing a result, giving an example, or concluding. Examples: furthermore, however, therefore, for instance, in conclusion.

Overusing linkers in one sentence looks memorised and lowers the Coherence and Cohesion score. Use one, well-placed connector.

'Beside' means next to; the linker meaning 'in addition' is 'besides' with an -s.

- Aim for a range, not a repetition — use two or three different linkers per paragraph rather than one word ten times. — একই শব্দ দশবার নয়, প্রতি প্যারায় দুই-তিনটি ভিন্ন linker ব্যবহার করুন।
- Master comma rules: put a comma after an opening linker (However, In addition) and around a mid-sentence one. — Comma-র নিয়ম শিখুন: বাক্যের শুরুর linker-এর পরে comma বসান (However, In addition)।
- Cohesion is more than linkers — use pronouns (this, they) and synonyms so ideas connect naturally. — Cohesion শুধু linker নয় — pronoun (this, they) ও synonym ব্যবহার করে ভাবনা স্বাভাবিকভাবে যুক্ত করুন।
- Never use casual linkers like 'plus', 'and so' or 'so' at the start of a formal Task 2 sentence. — Task 2-এর আনুষ্ঠানিক বাক্যে 'plus', 'and so' বা 'so' দিয়ে শুরু করবেন না।

How many linking words should I use in IELTS Writing Task 2?
There is no fixed number, but two or three well-placed linkers per paragraph is plenty. Examiners reward accurate, varied cohesion, not the sheer quantity of connectors, so overusing them actually lowers your Coherence and Cohesion band.
Do linking words guarantee a higher band score?
No. Cohesion is only one of four criteria. Using linkers wrongly or mechanically can lower your score, while a strong answer also needs clear ideas, accurate grammar and a good range of vocabulary. Think of linkers as the glue, not the building.
Which linking words look memorised and should I avoid?
Long formulaic phrases such as 'Last but not least' and stacking 'Firstly, secondly, moreover, furthermore' in one place read as memorised. Prefer natural connectors that genuinely fit the relationship between your ideas.
