IELTS Writing Task 2 asks you to write a formal 250-word essay in about 40 minutes, and it carries twice the marks of Task 1. A clear structure and a good argument matter far more than big words — this guide shows you exactly how to plan and write one.
IELTS Writing Task 2-তে প্রায় ৪০ মিনিটে ২৫০ শব্দের একটি formal essay লিখতে হয়, আর এতে Task 1-এর দ্বিগুণ নম্বর থাকে। কঠিন শব্দের চেয়ে পরিষ্কার structure ও যুক্তি অনেক বেশি জরুরি — এই গাইডে ঠিক কীভাবে পরিকল্পনা করে লিখবেন তা দেখানো হয়েছে।

Task 2 is an argumentative essay where you respond to a question — opinion (agree/disagree), discussion (both views), problem/solution, or advantages/disadvantages — with a clear position supported by reasons and examples.
Task 2 হলো একটি argumentative essay, যেখানে কোনো প্রশ্নের উত্তর দিতে হয় — opinion (agree/disagree), discussion (দুই মত), problem/solution, বা advantages/disadvantages — নিজের অবস্থান স্পষ্ট করে কারণ ও উদাহরণ দিয়ে।

চারটি প্যারায় লিখুন: (১) Introduction — প্রশ্নটিকে নিজের ভাষায় লিখে (paraphrase) নিজের অবস্থান বলুন। (২) ও (৩) দুটি body paragraph — প্রতিটিতে একটি করে মূল ভাব, ব্যাখ্যা ও একটি উদাহরণ দিন। (৪) Conclusion — মূল কথাটি অন্যভাবে বলুন, নতুন কিছু নয়। ২৫০ শব্দের বেশি লিখুন, কমপক্ষে ৪০ মিনিট নিন; ৫ মিনিট পরিকল্পনায়, ৩০ মিনিট লেখায়, ৫ মিনিট চেক করায়। মনে রাখবেন — একটিই স্পষ্ট opinion পুরো essay জুড়ে ধরে রাখুন।

- Giving an example: 'For instance, a recent study found that ...'উদাহরণ দেওয়া: 'For instance, a recent study found that ...' — উদাহরণস্বরূপ, সাম্প্রতিক একটি গবেষণায় দেখা গেছে যে ...।
- Concession: 'Although some people claim ..., this argument overlooks ...'স্বীকার করে খণ্ডন: 'Although some people claim ..., this argument overlooks ...' — কিছু মানুষ দাবি করলেও, এই যুক্তি ... উপেক্ষা করে।
- Conclusion: 'In conclusion, while both sides have merit, the evidence suggests that ...'উপসংহার: 'In conclusion, while both sides have merit, the evidence suggests that ...' — উপসংহারে, উভয় পক্ষেরই যুক্তি থাকলেও, প্রমাণ ইঙ্গিত দেয় যে ...।
- Linking ideas: 'Furthermore, ... . As a result, ...'ভাব যুক্ত করা: 'Furthermore, ... . As a result, ...' — অধিকন্তু, ...; ফলে, ...।
- Balanced opinion: 'To some extent I agree, but only when ...'ভারসাম্যপূর্ণ মত: 'To some extent I agree, but only when ...' — কিছুটা একমত, তবে কেবল যখন ...।
Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
Writing a general essay that ignores the exact question.
Answer every part of the specific task prompt directly.
'Task Response' is a whole band score — off-topic or partial answers cap your band at 5.
Do you think technology is good? Yes I think technology is very good and nice.
I firmly believe that technology brings more benefits than drawbacks.
Task 2 must be formal and academic — avoid casual phrasing, 'nice', or contractions.
Changing your opinion in the conclusion.
Keep the same clear position from introduction to conclusion.
A consistent thesis is rewarded; a wavering opinion confuses the examiner and lowers coherence.
Writing only 180 words to save time.
Write at least 250 words, ideally 260–280.
Essays under 250 words receive a word-count penalty regardless of quality.
Using memorised 'high-level' phrases that do not fit the topic.
Use natural language that directly serves your argument.
Examiners penalise memorised chunks that do not connect to the question.

- Spend the first 5 minutes planning: decide your opinion and note two main ideas before writing. — প্রথম ৫ মিনিট পরিকল্পনায় দিন: লেখার আগে নিজের opinion ঠিক করে দুটি মূল ভাব লিখে নিন।
- One idea per paragraph — state it, explain it, then give one example. — প্রতি প্যারায় একটিই ভাব — বলুন, ব্যাখ্যা করুন, তারপর একটি উদাহরণ দিন।
- Save 5 minutes at the end to check verb tenses, articles and spelling. — শেষে ৫ মিনিট রাখুন verb tense, article ও বানান পরীক্ষা করতে।
- Range beats rarity — use a mix of simple and complex sentences accurately rather than only long ones. — বিরলতা নয়, বৈচিত্র্যই মূল্যবান — শুধু বড় বাক্য নয়, সহজ ও জটিল বাক্য মিশিয়ে নির্ভুলভাবে লিখুন।

How long should I spend on IELTS Writing Task 2?
About 40 minutes of the 60-minute Writing test. Task 2 is worth two-thirds of your Writing score, so do Task 1 first in 20 minutes, then give Task 2 the remaining 40.
Do I need to give my own opinion in Task 2?
Only when the question asks for it. For 'agree or disagree' and 'to what extent' questions, state a clear opinion and keep it throughout. For 'discuss both views' questions, present both sides and then give your view.
Does using difficult vocabulary increase my band score?
Not by itself. Examiners reward a natural range of vocabulary used accurately. A precise common word beats a rare word used wrongly, which actually lowers your Lexical Resource score.
