English Idioms with the Word 'Heart'
Heart শব্দ দিয়ে ইংরেজি Idioms
Introductionভূমিকা
English uses 'heart' in dozens of idioms, and in almost none of them does it mean the organ in your chest — 'learn something by heart' means to memorise it, and 'a heart of gold' means a kind nature. This page gives the eight you will actually hear and read, with the Bangla sense of each.
ইংরেজিতে “heart” শব্দটি অসংখ্য idiom-এ আসে, আর তার প্রায় কোনোটিতেই এটি বুকের ভেতরের অঙ্গ বোঝায় না — “learn something by heart” মানে মুখস্থ করা, আর “a heart of gold” মানে দরাজ, ভালো মন। এই পাতায় সবচেয়ে বেশি ব্যবহৃত আটটি heart idiom, প্রতিটির বাংলা অর্থসহ।
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
A heart idiom is a fixed expression in which 'heart' stands for feeling, courage, kindness or memory rather than the body part. 'Take something to heart', for example, means to be hurt by criticism and think about it seriously.
Heart idiom হলো এমন নির্দিষ্ট বাক্যাংশ যেখানে “heart” শরীরের অঙ্গ নয়, বরং অনুভূতি, সাহস, দয়া বা স্মৃতি বোঝায়। যেমন “take something to heart” মানে সমালোচনা গায়ে মেখে নেওয়া, গুরুত্ব দিয়ে ভাবা।
Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা
Heart নিয়ে দরকারি idiom গুলো বাংলা অর্থসহ: “learn something by heart” = পুরোপুরি মুখস্থ করা; “have a heart of gold” = খুব ভালো ও উদার মনের মানুষ হওয়া; “a heart-to-heart (talk)” = মন খুলে সরাসরি আলাপ; “break somebody's heart” = কাউকে গভীরভাবে কষ্ট দেওয়া; “wear your heart on your sleeve” = মনের অনুভূতি লুকাতে না পারা, মুখে-চেহারায় সব ফুটে ওঠা; “have a change of heart” = আগের সিদ্ধান্ত বা মনোভাব বদলে ফেলা; “take something to heart” = সমালোচনা গায়ে মেখে নেওয়া; “lose heart” = মনোবল হারিয়ে ফেলা। দুটো জায়গায় বাংলাভাষীরা সবচেয়ে বেশি হোঁচট খান। প্রথমত, বাংলা “মন” শব্দটি ইংরেজিতে কখনো heart, কখনো mind, আবার কখনো mood হয়ে যায় — “মন খারাপ” মানে “I'm not in a good mood” বা “I'm feeling down”, কিন্তু “My heart is bad” বললে ইংরেজিতে বোঝায় আপনার হৃদযন্ত্রে সমস্যা আছে। দ্বিতীয়ত, “by heart” বাক্যাংশটি নিজে কোনো ক্রিয়া নয়; এটি learn, know বা recite-এর মতো ক্রিয়ার পরে বসে — “I have learnt the poem by heart”, “She knows the whole surah by heart”। তাই “I byhearted it” বা “byheart the definition” ইংরেজিতে চলে না, যদিও আমাদের ক্লাসরুমে কথাটা খুব শোনা যায়।

Tipsটিপস
- 'Learn by heart' means memorising the exact words; for understanding an idea, say 'learn' or 'understand' instead. — “Learn by heart” মানে হুবহু শব্দ মুখস্থ করা; কোনো ধারণা বোঝার কথা বললে বলুন “learn” বা “understand”।
- 'A change of heart' is about feelings and attitude; 'change your mind' is about a decision. Both are common, but they are not the same. — “A change of heart” অনুভূতি ও মনোভাব বদলানো; “change your mind” সিদ্ধান্ত বদলানো। দুটোই প্রচলিত, তবে এক নয়।
- 'Break somebody's heart' is strong — keep it for real grief or a serious disappointment, not for a small upset. — “Break somebody's heart” খুব জোরালো কথা — গভীর কষ্ট বা বড় হতাশার জন্য রাখুন, ছোটখাটো মন খারাপে নয়।
- Heart idioms are neutral in tone, so most of them are safe in an interview, an email or a class presentation. — Heart idiom গুলোর ভঙ্গি সাধারণ, তাই বেশিরভাগই ইন্টারভিউ, ইমেইল বা ক্লাস উপস্থাপনায় নিরাপদে ব্যবহার করা যায়।
