Introductionভূমিকা

Bangla gives us one idiom for learning that everyone here owns: মুখস্থ করা, and its English partner, learn by heart. What our schooling gives us far less of is the vocabulary for understanding — the moment something finally makes sense. English has a set of phrases for exactly that: the penny dropped, it clicked, I got the hang of it, I put two and two together. Learning those is not just vocabulary; it gives you words for a kind of thinking most of us were never asked to describe.

শেখা নিয়ে বাংলা আমাদের একটা idiom দেয় যেটা এখানে সবার জানা: মুখস্থ করা, আর তার ইংরেজি সঙ্গী learn by heart। আমাদের শিক্ষাব্যবস্থা যেটা অনেক কম দেয়, তা হলো বোঝা নিয়ে শব্দ — যে মুহূর্তে জিনিসটা হঠাৎ পরিষ্কার হয়ে যায়। ইংরেজিতে ঠিক এর জন্যই কয়েকটা বাক্যাংশ আছে: the penny dropped, it clicked, I got the hang of it, I put two and two together। এগুলো শেখা কেবল শব্দভান্ডার বাড়ানো নয়; এগুলো এমন এক ধরনের চিন্তার ভাষা দেয়, যেটা বর্ণনা করতে আমাদের বেশির ভাগকে কখনো বলাই হয়নি।

Thinking idioms cover four moments: memorising (learn by heart), working something out (put two and two together), suddenly understanding (the penny dropped, it clicked) and postponing a decision (sleep on it). Each one names a different mental event, and they are not interchangeable.

অর্থগুলো: “learn by heart” = হুবহু মুখস্থ করা; “a quick learner” = দ্রুত শিখে ফেলে এমন কেউ; “put two and two together” = ছড়ানো ইঙ্গিত জুড়ে আসল ব্যাপারটা বুঝে ফেলা; “food for thought” = ভাবার মতো কিছু; “on the tip of my tongue” = জিভের ডগায় আছে অথচ মনে পড়ছে না; “sleep on it” = এক রাত ভেবে পরদিন সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়া; “the penny dropped” = অবশেষে ব্যাপারটা বুঝলাম; “it clicked” = হঠাৎ মিলে গেল, বুঝে গেলাম; “get the hang of something” = কাজটা রপ্ত করে ফেলা; “rack your brains” = মাথা খাটিয়ে মনে করার চেষ্টা করা; “off the top of my head” = না ভেবেই, চট করে যা মনে আসছে। এখন কয়েকটা তফাত, যেগুলো না জানলে কাছাকাছি শব্দ বসিয়ে ভুল হয়। “Learn by heart” — by mind নয়; আর এটা কেবল হুবহু মুখস্থের জন্য, কবিতা বা সূত্রের জন্য; ধারণা বোঝা বোঝাতে বলুন “understand” বা “get the hang of”। “Put TWO and TWO together” — সংখ্যাটা বাঁধা, one and one নয়, আর এটা সাধারণ যোগ-বিয়োগ নয়, ইঙ্গিত জোড়ার কথা। “On the TIP of my tongue” — top নয়। “Sleep ON it” — over নয়। আর “the penny dropped” বাক্যাংশটার পিছনের ছবিটা জেনে রাখলে ভোলা কঠিন: পুরোনো দিনের পয়সা-চালিত যন্ত্রে কয়েন ফেলার পর একটু দেরিতে খট করে পড়ত আর যন্ত্রটা চালু হতো — বোঝার মুহূর্তটাও ঠিক তেমনই দেরি করে আসে। আর ব্যবহারের জায়গাগুলো আলাদা করে চিনে রাখুন, কারণ এদের কয়েকটা আশ্চর্য রকম কাজের। “Sleep on it” সবচেয়ে ভদ্র উপায় সময় চাওয়ার — কেউ তাৎক্ষণিক উত্তর চাইলে “Let me sleep on it and get back to you tomorrow” বললে না বলাও হলো না, তাড়াহুড়োও করা হলো না; চাকরির প্রস্তাব বা দামের আলোচনায় এটা খুব কাজে দেয়। “Off the top of my head” ব্যবহার করুন যখন আন্দাজি উত্তর দিচ্ছেন কিন্তু দায় নিতে চান না: “Off the top of my head, about forty students — I'll check and confirm.” “Food for thought” আলোচনা বা উপস্থাপনা শেষ করার সুন্দর উপায়। আর “on the tip of my tongue” সেই একমাত্র বাক্যটা যেটা কথা আটকে গেলে সময় কিনে দেয় — চুপ করে না থেকে বলুন “Sorry, the word is on the tip of my tongue”, আর কথোপকথনটা চলতে থাকে। IELTS Speaking-এ এই একটা বাক্য বহু পরীক্ষার্থীকে নীরবতার ফাঁদ থেকে বাঁচিয়েছে।

The idiom for memorising is 'by heart', not 'by mind'.

The fixed idiom is 'two and two', not 'one and one'.

The idiom uses 'tip', not 'top'.

To delay a decision to think more, use 'sleep on it', not 'sleep over it'.
